Twenty-three students from Odisha’s World Skill Center (WSC) in Bhubaneswar have departed for Singapore to begin a six-month paid internship programme, marking another significant step in creating international employment opportunities for the state’s skilled youth.
The students, belonging to WSC’s 2025-26 batch, form the fifth cohort from the state-run advanced skill training institute to join the Singapore Internship Programme (SIP). The initiative is designed to give young trainees direct exposure to global industry standards, help them develop workplace skills valued across borders, and improve their prospects of securing jobs overseas after the internship ends.
During their stay, the interns will be placed with six Singapore-based organisations: Four Seasons Hotel, Goodwood Park Hotel, Newway Systems, Neptune Technology, Grace Electrical Engineering and Vantive Manufacturing. The placements cover hospitality, technology, electrical engineering and manufacturing, giving the students hands-on experience in competitive international work environments.
“The six-month internship in Singapore will provide students with an opportunity to apply their skills in real-world work environments and gain new experiences. This will help them become better prepared for their future careers,” said WSC Chief Executive Officer Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra. “Our aim is to equip the youth of Odisha to achieve success in India and abroad through their skills and capabilities,” he added.
A welcome reception for the new cohort was held in Singapore on Wednesday. The event was attended by representatives of the Indian High Commission, Singapore’s Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, ITE Education Services and participating industry organisations, underscoring the strong institutional support behind the programme.
The Singapore Internship Programme is jointly implemented by the Odisha government’s Skill Development and Technical Education Department and ITE Education Services, Singapore. It forms part of a broader effort by the state to link high-quality skill training with tangible career outcomes, both domestically and internationally.
World Skill Center, established as an advanced skill training institute, focuses on producing industry-ready technicians and professionals. By sending successive batches to Singapore, the centre is building a growing pipeline of young people who return with global exposure or, in many cases, transition directly into overseas employment. Officials note that several students from earlier cohorts have already received job offers from their host companies in Singapore, demonstrating the programme’s ability to convert internships into longer-term career opportunities.
For Odisha’s youth, the opportunity carries particular significance. Many of the students come from backgrounds where access to international work experience has traditionally been limited. A paid six-month placement in Singapore not only provides financial support during the internship but also exposes them to advanced workplace practices, multicultural teams, and industry benchmarks that are difficult to replicate in a classroom setting.
Hospitality trainees will gain experience in premium hotels known for high service standards, while those placed in technology, electrical engineering and manufacturing companies will work with contemporary systems, processes and quality frameworks. This sectoral diversity reflects WSC’s multi-disciplinary training approach and Singapore’s strengths as a regional hub for both services and advanced manufacturing.
The programme also strengthens the education and skills partnership between India and Singapore. Singapore’s ITE Education Services brings established expertise in technical and vocational education and training, while Odisha’s Skill Development and Technical Education Department provides the institutional framework and selection of motivated candidates. The collaboration illustrates how targeted international linkages can amplify the impact of domestic skill development efforts.
Beyond individual career gains, such initiatives contribute to wider economic goals. India’s growing emphasis on skill development aims to prepare a large young population for both domestic industry needs and global labour markets. Programmes like SIP help address the common gap between training and employment by giving students verified international work experience that employers recognise. For the students themselves, the experience often builds confidence, professional networks and a clearer understanding of the standards expected in competitive workplaces.
As the fifth cohort settles into their placements, the focus remains on maximising learning and performance during the six months. Mentorship from host companies, structured feedback, and the chance to apply classroom knowledge in real operations are expected to shape both their technical competence and professional outlook.

Looking ahead, the continued success of the programme will depend on sustained collaboration between the Odisha government, ITE Education Services and Singapore industry partners. The track record so far successful placements, positive industry feedback and job offers for earlier batches suggests that the model is delivering results. For the latest group of 23 students, the internship represents more than a temporary overseas stint; it is a potential gateway to global career pathways that were once out of reach for many young people from the state.
By combining rigorous skill training at home with structured international exposure, Odisha’s World Skill Center is helping its graduates compete in a wider job market. The departure of the fifth cohort reinforces the message that quality skills, when paired with the right opportunities, can open doors far beyond state and national borders.
