- ASIA EDUCATION REVIEW - JUNE 202588ERNEWS China and Indonesia have initiated talks to broaden cooperation in the higher education sector, focusing on connecting vocational education to industry, developing digital technology education, and enhancing lecturer capability.Speaking to Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong in Jakarta, Indonesia Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie urged Indonesia to take a leaf from China's successful experience in integrating vocational education with the industry. "All aspects of China's vocational education system have a close connection with industry. Indonesia can take a similar approach in a university-to-university-to-business system", Christie stated in a release made on Tuesday.She said that such a system might be used to enhance Indonesia's digital technology studies a rapidly growing sector in the current digital age.Regarding lecturer development, Christie indicated that as few as 24 percent of Indonesian lecturers hold doctoral degrees. In answer, she called on China to expand its scholarship quota for Indonesian lecturers at Tsinghua University to 50.This year, about 20 people were awarded scholarships to study at Tsinghua University. The ministry aims to simplify the process and increase the quota next year", she added. Christie also hoped that collaboration with China could assist Indonesia in transforming its education model from a top-down to a more responsive one. In reply, Ambassador Wang advocated for the scholarship program and called for instituting a lecturer exchange program to promote greater scientific cooperation and deepen cultural exchanges between the two countries.
