China and Sri Lanka Launch National Digital Education Initiative

    • China and Sri Lanka launch national digital education project to modernize schools.
    • Smart classrooms and education cloud to enhance digital learning and skills.
    • Project supports future-ready students and builds pathways to digital jobs.

China and Sri Lanka have jointly launched a major digital transformation project aimed at modernizing general education across Sri Lanka. The project was unveiled in Colombo in the presence of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong.

The initiative focuses on upgrading digital infrastructure, improving teaching quality, and building future-ready skills among students and educators. It marks an important step in aligning Sri Lanka’s education system with the needs of a digital economy.

Under the project, Sri Lanka will establish a national education cloud data center, a multimedia conference center, and a streaming media hub. These facilities will support digital learning, virtual collaboration, and data-driven education planning. A software-defined network management system will also be developed for the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education to improve coordination and service delivery.

One of the key highlights of the project is the setup of 900 smart classrooms across 500 schools nationwide. These classrooms will be equipped with modern digital tools to support interactive learning and help students develop digital literacy and problem-solving skills from an early age. The project will also provide digital teaching resources, including materials for Chinese language education.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the initiative fits closely with Sri Lanka’s broader digital economy goals. She noted that better connectivity and data-based decision-making will strengthen education services and prepare students for future jobs.

The project is expected to improve access to quality education, strengthen digital skills, and create long-term opportunities for students, teachers, and the workforce. By modernizing classrooms and systems, Sri Lanka aims to build a stronger foundation for innovation, employment, and sustainable growth.
