City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Southeast University have embarked on a new era of academic partnership. President of Southeast University Professor Sun Youhong led a delegation to visit CityUHK earlier for meetings with President Freddy Boey and the University management team, including Vice President (Talent and International Strategy) Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice President (Communication Engagement) Professor Chan Chi-hou, and Associate Vice President (Global Strategy) Professor Lin Fen. The two parties had extensive talks on intensifying academic exchange and joint research centers and signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
During the welcome address, President Boey mentioned that CityUHK has been actively pursuing internationalisation and developing innovation entrepreneurship. It has been featured as the 'Most International University in the World' for two successive years by Times Higher Education (THE), which reflects the University's top position in the global higher-education sector.
This recognition not only confirms CityUHK's efforts in the past, but also inspires us to further establish Hong Kong's significant position as a global education hub", said President Boey. He said he looks forward to enhancing cooperation with Southeast University to cultivate more forward-looking innovative talent.
During the talks, President Boey and Professor Sun signed an MoU together and witnessed the signing of another agreement between Professor Lu Jian, Dean of the College of Engineering of CityUHK, and Professor Guo Tong, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering of Southeast University. The two sides, under the agreement, will set up joint research centers in engineering, architecture and civil engineering to facilitate cooperative development of advanced scientific studies.
Joining the discussions too were Professor Lu Yi and Professor Lu Guoyang, who are Southeast University alumni and now professors of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at CityUHK. Professor Lu was designated a 'Highly Cited Researcher 2024' by Clarivate, the sole researcher in the social sciences category from CityUHK chosen in this list.
CityUHK's College of Engineering has excelled significantly in academic and research quality, with 17 of Clarivate 'Highly Cited Researchers' and 113 scholars included in the 'World's Top 2 percent Most-cited Scientists', the latter being the highest in CityUHK faculties.
One of the best universities on Mainland China with a history, Southeast University dates back to Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902. Presently, it is a national 'Double First Class' university, ranked 15th in the 2023 ShanghaiRanking, with such disciplines as architecture, civil engineering and electronic engineering always being in the top three in the Country.
This visit by the Southeast University delegation further established the collaboration between the two universities and set a good foundation for wider interdisciplinary collaboration in the future.
