Dubai Culture and KHDA Partner to Integrate Arts into School Education

In a significant step toward embedding creativity at the heart of learning, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), in collaboration with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), organised a brainstorming session titled 'Innovation Lab: Integrating Arts and Design into the Educational System'.

 The session, held at the Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children, brought together senior leaders and specialists from both organisations to explore practical ways of integrating arts and design into private school curricula while building a structured framework to identify, nurture and empower talented students.

The initiative forms part of Dubai Culture’s broader strategy to advance creative education, equip future generations with innovation skills, and reinforce Dubai’s position as a global centre for the creative economy. Participants examined the current state of arts and design education in schools, identified opportunities and challenges, and discussed how creative disciplines can be systematically woven into everyday learning.

Discussions covered a wide range of creative fields, including creative writing, music, theatre, visual arts, design, culinary arts, project-based learning and extracurricular reading. The goal was to move beyond isolated arts classes and create an integrated approach that supports the early discovery and development of young talent.

Delegates also reviewed existing creative programmes already running in schools and studied international best practices that could be adapted to the Dubai context, with the aim of strengthening the overall education system and fostering an environment that encourages creativity and innovation.

The session concluded with several concrete recommendations. These included conducting a comprehensive study to identify policies and programmes suitable for implementation across schools, mapping opportunities for collaboration with relevant stakeholders, and defining priority initiatives for both the short and long term. Participants stressed the importance of developing a shared vision for the future of arts and education in Dubai, aligned with the emirate’s ambition to build a knowledge- and innovation-driven creative economy.

Ahlam Al Bannai, Director of the Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children, described the session as an important step toward strengthening the presence of the arts in education. “The arts are a fundamental pillar of an education system capable of preparing future generations with the skills of innovation, critical thinking and creative expression, enabling them to meet the demands of the future,” she said. “This reflects Dubai Culture’s commitment to developing an integrated education ecosystem that positions the arts as an essential part of the learning experience, while nurturing creative talent and supporting the continued growth of the creative economy".

She added that the outcomes of the session would help define priorities for the next phase of work and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, ensuring the development of high-impact initiatives that deliver sustainable results for the education sector.

The importance of arts education is well supported by research. A study by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences highlighted that arts education plays a vital role in the personal and professional development of citizens and contributes to the economic growth and social sustainability of communities. It builds well-rounded individuals, broadens understanding and appreciation of other cultures and histories, supports social and emotional development, fosters empathy, reduces intolerance, improves school engagement and culture, develops valuable life and career skills, and strengthens community and civic engagement. 

Arts education also uniquely allows students to engage with the past in ways that bring history to life beyond textbooks, while expanding curricula beyond a Western-centric focus deepens cross-cultural understanding.

In the United Arab Emirates, arts education is expanding rapidly as the country positions itself as a global cultural hub. Schools in both the public and private sectors are increasingly integrating visual arts, music and drama to foster critical thinking, creativity and balanced student development. While basic art and music form part of early state curricula, many private international schools offer robust facilities such as specialised design studios, large auditoriums and immersive pathways within IB or British curricula.

Programmes such as the A.R.M. Holding Children’s Programme, run in partnership with Art Dubai, illustrate the scale of current efforts. As the UAE’s largest cultural education initiative, it connects prominent international and regional artists with more than 15,000 students across over 100 schools through hands-on creative workshops designed for ages 5 to 17. Proximity to major institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi further provides students with unique out-of-classroom inspiration.

The arts have long been an integral part of the Arab world’s history and culture. Islamic art, dating back to the seventh century, continues to be celebrated for its lasting influence on architecture, painting, crafts and literature. Building on this rich heritage while adapting international models offers Dubai a distinctive opportunity to create an education system in which creativity is not an optional extra but a core component of learning.

By bringing together Dubai Culture and KHDA, the Innovation Lab session has laid the groundwork for a more coordinated approach to creative education. The recommendations that emerged from policy studies and partnership mapping to short- and long-term priority setting provide a practical roadmap for the next phase of work. If implemented effectively, these efforts can help ensure that students in Dubai’s private schools gain consistent access to high-quality arts and design experiences, discover their talents early, and develop the creative and critical skills needed for the future.

The collaboration also reinforces Dubai’s wider ambition to grow its creative economy. An education system that systematically nurtures artistic and design talent contributes directly to a pipeline of innovators, cultural practitioners and creative professionals. In doing so, it supports the emirate’s vision of a diversified, knowledge-based economy in which creativity plays a central role.

As Dubai continues to strengthen its position as a global cultural and educational destination, initiatives such as this Innovation Lab demonstrate a clear commitment to making the arts an essential part of the student experience.
