Etisalat UAE, Khalifa University & NYU Abu Dhabi Unveil First 6G Frame

  • In a landmark advance for the global telecommunications industry, etisalat UAE, Khalifa University of Science and Technology and New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have jointly released the first peer-reviewed, operator-grade framework for designing and dimensioning commercial 6G networks using centimetre-wave (cmWave) spectrum.

Published in the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, the research moves 6G from conceptual architecture into actionable engineering reality and positions the UAE as a primary architect of the next generation of mobile connectivity.

The framework answers a question that has long puzzled operators worldwide: how should a commercial 6G network actually be planned, dimensioned and deployed? Unlike laboratory demonstrations that focus on peak data rates, the study provides practical methodologies for coverage planning, capacity dimensioning, link-budget design, Extremely Large Aperture Arrays (ELAA), Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO), interference management and outdoor-to-indoor performance.

Critically, the methodology remains relevant to the emerging U6GHz ecosystem and higher upper-mid-band spectrum, giving operators a flexible foundation as global 6G standards continue to evolve toward the expected 2030 commercial launch.

Dr Bayan Sharif, Provost of Khalifa University, emphasised the collaborative impact: “This research demonstrates how partnership between academia and industry can accelerate the translation of advanced research into technologies with real-world impact. Through its work on 6G networks, Khalifa University is connecting scientific expertise with real-world challenges to advance the knowledge and technologies that will shape the future of connectivity, strengthen national capabilities, and reinforce the UAE’s role in shaping the next generation of global communications.”

Marwan Bin Shakar, Chief Technology Officer of etisalat UAE, framed the work as a bridge from vision to viable networks: “This work takes our 6G vision from concept towards practical network design, demonstrating how we can intelligently evolve existing infrastructure to build the networks of the future. 6G leadership will be shaped by engineering that turns innovation into viable, sustainable and economically efficient networks. Together with Khalifa University and NYU Abu Dhabi, we are developing a practical blueprint for the next generation of networks, demonstrating how intelligent infrastructure evolution can unlock greater capacity and create a more sustainable path to 6G.”

Fabio Piano, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, highlighted the research strength of the partnership: “Our dynamic partnership with etisalat and Khalifa University is intensifying the impact of NYU Abu Dhabi’s research strength in wireless communications. NYU Abu Dhabi Wireless Center and our partners in the UAE have demonstrated how emerging technologies can support the development of future networks. It exemplifies the high value that can be achieved when universities and the private sector work together to drive scientific expertise towards breakthrough innovation.”

At the technical core of the framework lies the strategic use of advanced ELAA antenna architectures and spatial multiplexing. These technologies compensate for the greater propagation losses inherent in cmWave frequencies while unlocking substantially higher capacity.

The research shows that operators can achieve full coverage parity with existing 5G macro grids and deliver a verified 3.0× capacity increase without resorting to dense small-cell deployments. This finding is particularly significant for capital efficiency: rather than requiring wholesale densification of sites, carriers can evolve current infrastructure through intelligent antenna and beam-forming upgrades.

The study therefore supplies a clear migration path. Operators can begin planning 6G layers that reuse existing site grids, apply refined link-budget rules tailored to cmWave, and dimension capacity using realistic multi-user MIMO and interference models. Because the methodology is spectrum-agnostic within the upper-mid-band range, it can adapt as regulators allocate U6GHz and neighbouring bands and as 3GPP and other standards bodies finalise 6G specifications.

Beyond the immediate engineering value, the work carries strategic weight for the UAE. By producing the first operator-validated blueprint of its kind, the three institutions have shifted the country from technology adopter to technology architect. The peer-reviewed publication in a leading IEEE journal further legitimises the findings on the global stage, offering a reference that operators, vendors and regulators elsewhere can build upon.

The full research paper is available on IEEE Xplore. As the industry moves toward the 2030 target for commerc ial 6G, this UAE-led framework provides an early, practical foundation for networks that will be denser in capability rather than denser in physical sitesdelivering higher capacity, better energy efficiency and a more sustainable evolution path for mobile connectivity worldwide.
