Indonesia has officially launched its Garuda School program, a new national initiative aimed at strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and preparing high school students for admission to leading universities around the world.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, announced the launch, highlighting the program’s focus on developing future scientists, scholars, and leaders. “We believe that strong STEM education is key to transforming Indonesia into a developed country”, he said during the inauguration at M.H. Thamrin High School in Jakarta.
Garuda Schools are designed as boarding schools for senior high students, offering advanced training in STEM subjects along with leadership development. The schools follow a dual funding model, 80% of students will receive full government scholarships, while 20% will pay tuition.
The program, part of President Prabowo Subianto’s quick win education initiatives, started with 12 high performing schools already operating across cities like Banda Aceh, Jakarta, Bogor, Magelang, and Sorong. An additional four new schools will open in East Belitung, South Timor Tengah, Konawe, and Bulungan in the next academic year.
