- Indonesia offers fully funded study options for Kenyan students
- Programs cover undergraduate to doctoral degrees
- Focus on skills, employability, and human capital development
Indonesia has opened new higher education opportunities for students from Kenya, with a special focus on learners from Mombasa County. The initiative allows eligible students to pursue undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs at Indonesian universities through government-backed international scholarships.
The offer is part of Indonesia’s broader education outreach to developing nations, according to officials from the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education. The scholarships aim to build skills, improve job readiness, and strengthen long-term development cooperation.
Among the key schemes is the Developing Country Partnership Scholarship, which supports students from emerging economies. Another option is the Indonesian Aid Scholarship, managed through the International Development Cooperation Fund, with a focus on capacity building and workforce development.
Officials said education ties between Indonesia and Kenya have grown steadily since diplomatic relations began in 1979. Cooperation has expanded across priority fields such as agriculture, economics, renewable energy, green development, vocational education, and manufacturing.

Leaders from Mombasa County welcomed the move, noting that limited local university capacity and financial barriers restrict access to higher education. Currently, the region has only one public university.
Around 17 students from Mombasa have already begun studying in Indonesia after completing cultural and academic preparation programs. Authorities expect the partnership to grow, enabling more Kenyan students to gain skills and international exposure that improve long-term employment prospects.
