Lingnan University and Qingdao University have established an education partnership to enhance academic collaboration, student and faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives, and knowledge sharing. Strengthening international academic partnerships and advancing innovation in higher education, Lingnan University in Hong Kong recently welcomed a high-level delegation from Qingdao University, led by President Prof. Wei Zhiqiang, in a visit that highlighted growing collaboration opportunities in artificial intelligence, data science, healthcare research, and global education. The delegation was warmly received by Prof. S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, along with senior university representatives, marking an important milestone in expanding academic cooperation between institutions in mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
A key highlight of the visit was the signing of a university-level Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening educational partnerships, promoting interdisciplinary research, encouraging student and faculty exchanges, and creating new opportunities for collaborative academic development. University leaders described the partnership as a strategic step toward fostering deeper connections between higher education institutions in Shandong Province and Hong Kong while supporting China’s broader vision for educational innovation and talent development.
During discussions with the visiting delegation, Prof. Qin emphasized Lingnan University’s rich educational heritage spanning more than a century and its commitment to delivering a modern liberal arts education that successfully integrates the arts, sciences, and emerging technologies. He noted that the university has positioned itself as a leader in digital transformation in education, becoming one of the first universities in Hong Kong to provide free campus-wide access to generative artificial intelligence tools in 2023. Alongside this initiative, Lingnan implemented structured guidance programs to ensure students learn how to use AI technologies responsibly and ethically, helping prepare graduates for an increasingly technology-driven world.
Prof. Qin also highlighted the university’s recent achievements, noting strong growth in student applications and graduate employment outcomes. These accomplishments have reinforced Lingnan University’s reputation as a forward-looking institution that effectively combines academic excellence with career readiness. He pointed out that Lingnan University and Qingdao University share similar historical foundations and educational values, creating a strong basis for meaningful long-term collaboration.

Expressing appreciation for the warm reception, Prof. Wei introduced Qingdao University’s distinguished academic legacy and comprehensive disciplinary strengths. He highlighted the institution’s internationally recognized achievements in textile engineering, a field in which Qingdao is regarded as a global leader, as well as its highly ranked medical education and healthcare research programs. According to Prof. Wei, the university is currently implementing its ambitious 'Super ABC' strategy, which focuses on advancing artificial intelligence, big data, computing power, and healthcare innovation. Supported by a state-of-the-art supercomputing center and extensive medical data resources, Qingdao University has made significant progress in areas such as smart healthcare, intelligent textiles, and technology-driven medical solutions.
The leaders of both universities explored a wide range of collaborative opportunities during the visit. Discussions focused on advancing AI research, promoting interdisciplinary projects that combine healthcare and technology, strengthening cooperation in data science, and developing joint postgraduate education programs. They also examined possibilities for increasing student recruitment, facilitating academic exchanges, and creating platforms for faculty collaboration. These conversations resulted in broad consensus on future initiatives designed to enhance research impact and expand international learning opportunities.
Beyond formal meetings, the Qingdao University delegation toured Lingnan University’s campus and visited several notable facilities, including the Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall and the United Nations University Hub on Humanitarian Innovation and Technology at Lingnan University. The visit provided delegates with firsthand insight into Lingnan’s unique approach to combining technology education, humanitarian innovation, and interdisciplinary learning.
