Meralco And Cebu Universities Sign MOUs To Enhance Energy Education

    • Meralco Power Academy formalizes MOUs with University of San Carlos and Cebu Institute of Technology to strengthen engineering education in the Visayas.
    • Partnerships offer joint training, research projects, workshops, and industry immersion to equip students with practical skills for the energy sector.
    • MPA aims to develop a future-ready workforce, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world energy industry demands while promoting innovation and sustainability.

The education arm of Manila Electric Co., Meralco Power Academy, further solidified its presence in the Visayas region through the formalization of academic linkages with two of Cebu's finest engineering schools: the University of San Carlos and the Cebu Institute of Technology University. Marked by the signing of MOUs, the partnerships underscore MPA's commitment to better equip future engineers with the technical knowledge and industry-ready skills they need to respond to the dynamic requirements of the energy sector.

This accord with USC, which was inked on 27 October 2025, ushers in joint training programs, research projects aligned with goals on energy and sustainability, and immersion in the industry to help bridge gaps between academic studies and professional practice. As stated by USC President Fr. Francisco Antonio T. Estepa, SVD, Ph.D., the partnership "promises to be truly transformative, as its combination of a rigorous academic foundation at USC and practical industrial expertise at MPA guarantees that their graduates are not just employable but future-ready". He referred to the alliance as a mutual investment in innovation, energy security, and the sustainable development of the country.

In particular, the agreement between MPA and CIT University, sealed on 24 October 2025, offers engineering students workshops, knowledge-sharing, and on-site exposure to the energy industry. By exposing students to real-world applications, the partnership hopes to equip graduates with the technical and operational capabilities needed in a fast-changing energy environment.

Joining the momentous occasion were the officials of CIT University, headed by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture, Dr. Evangeline Evangelista, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Atty. Corazon Evangelista-Valencia, who joined the representatives of MPA to celebrate this momentous event, a show of commitment to developing engineering learning through hands-on, practical experiences.

For his part, MPA executive director Ian Chester V. Colorina underscored the importance of such linkages to formulate a capable, future-ready workforce in the Visayas. He said that close collaboration with leading academe allows MPA to offer relevant and valuable learning experiences to students for them to address the shifting needs of the energy industry.

The linkages are aimed at improving not just technical capability but also at driving innovation, sustainability, and excellence in engineering education. These initiatives further support MPA's continuing mandate of filling the gap between academe and industry. Providing a structured exposure to the energy sector and encouraging research and innovation, the Academy hopes that engineers in the Philippines will be truly prepared to help attain the country's long-term energy objectives.

With such strategic linkages, MPA remains at the forefront of developing a fresh breed of engineers who have the relevant skill, knowledge, and experience to actively participate in achieving the country's energy and sustainable development concerns.
