PhilSA Partners with MATE to Boost Agricultural Research and Education

    • PhilSA and MATE sign MOU to advance agriculture through space technology
    • Partnership enables research exchange and satellite-based agricultural solutions
    • Collaboration strengthens Philippines Hungary ties in science and education

The Philippine Space Agency and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance collaboration in agricultural research, education, and technology development. The agreement, signed on April 20, 2026, marks a strategic step toward integrating space science into real-world agricultural and environmental solutions.

The partnership was signed by PhilSA Ad Interim Director General Gay Jane P. Perez and MATE Rector Csaba Gyuricza. It focuses on leveraging space science and technology applications to address challenges in agriculture, particularly through data-driven approaches such as satellite-based monitoring and mapping.

Under the agreement, both institutions will facilitate the exchange of students, researchers, and academic personnel for training and collaborative research. The initiative will also promote the sharing of scientific publications, technical resources, and joint planning of education and research programs. A key area of cooperation includes the development of models for agricultural mapping, monitoring, and assessment using satellite data, along with the exploration of pilot projects in both countries.

Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Perez highlighted the role of academia in driving innovation within the space ecosystem, emphasizing how universities contribute to shaping future scientists and advancing knowledge. Dr. Gyuricza noted that the partnership reflects a shared vision of applying knowledge for societal benefit, particularly in supporting farmers, rural communities, and sustainable agricultural practices.
