PM Approves Student Loans, Eyes 1 Lakh Workers for Japan

    In a major move to support higher education abroad, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment to establish a loan support system for students aspiring to study overseas. The announcement, made by State Minister Nurul Hoque Nur following a high-level meeting at the Secretariat, highlights the government’s commitment to empowering students and enhancing Bangladesh’s global competitiveness through education.

    The meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by Expatriates’ Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury along with senior officials, also addressed broader strategies to strengthen the international workforce. Emphasizing the importance of language proficiency, the Prime Minister noted that mastery of third languages is crucial for Bangladeshi students and workers to access higher-paying opportunities and thrive in international environments. By equipping students with the financial and linguistic resources necessary for overseas study, the government aims to create a generation of globally competitive professionals.

    In addition to supporting students studying abroad, the government is taking steps to facilitate international employment opportunities. A plan is underway to expedite the deployment of 100,000 workers to Japan under an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reflecting a broader strategy to link education, skill development, and international work experience.

    On the diplomatic front, the Prime Minister instructed the Foreign Ministry to continue negotiations with European nations to establish direct consular and visa services in Bangladesh. Several countries have already begun offering these services locally, simplifying the process for students and workers seeking international opportunities.

    By combining financial support, language training, and streamlined visa facilitation, the government is laying the groundwork for a more globally competitive workforce. This initiative underscores the critical role of higher education abroad in shaping the skills and career prospects of Bangladesh’s youth, ensuring that students are better prepared to meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected world.
