San Marino Consulate Expands Education Support For Filipino Youth

The Consulate General of the Republic of San Marino in the Philippines is expanding its efforts to support education development, literacy programs, and cultural learning initiatives for Filipino students through a series of partnerships with schools, nonprofit organizations, and community stakeholders. The initiatives are designed to provide young learners with broader educational opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom instruction while promoting reading, creativity, and cultural awareness.

As educational systems worldwide adapt to changing social and economic demands, organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of collaborative programs that help students develop not only academic skills but also a deeper understanding of culture, community, and global citizenship. The Consulate's ongoing projects reflect this approach by focusing on creating inclusive learning environments and expanding access to educational resources for students across the Philippines.

According to Consul General Jean Henri Lhuillier, modern education must prepare students for a rapidly evolving and interconnected world. He emphasized that learning should go beyond basic literacy and include opportunities that encourage critical thinking, curiosity, cultural appreciation, and adaptability.

“Education today must prepare students not only to read and write, but also to understand the world around them, appreciate culture, and adapt to the future. Young learners need opportunities that encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong desire to learn”, says Lhuillier.

Guided by this vision, the Consulate has supported several initiatives aimed at strengthening student development, promoting lifelong learning, and increasing access to educational experiences that foster both academic and personal growth. These programs seek to help students become globally aware while maintaining strong connections to their local communities and cultural heritage.

A key partner in these efforts has been the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. (CLFI), which has worked alongside the Consulate to expand educational and community-based programs for young Filipinos. Through this collaboration, both organizations have supported projects that encourage literacy, creativity, and inclusive learning opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

Among the notable initiatives is the Consulate's partnership with Bookmark, Inc., which resulted in the publication of Pamilyang Papel, an educational storytelling and activity material created for children. The publication was developed to make cultural education more engaging and accessible by combining reading activities, storytelling, and interactive learning experiences. Through the program, young readers are introduced to important lessons about culture, heritage, and values while strengthening their literacy skills.

The Consulate has also continued to expand the Hooked on Books Program, a long-running initiative dedicated to improving learning environments and encouraging stronger reading habits among students. Implemented in collaboration with Cebuana Lhuillier and LINKS Philippines, the program focuses on increasing access to books and creating spaces where children can develop a lasting interest in reading.

One of the most significant developments under the program is the creation of the JHL-RSM Library, which represents the 30th milestone library established through the Hooked on Books initiative. The new facility is currently being constructed at Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School and is expected to serve as a modern learning hub for students in the community.

Preparations for the library's opening have already involved extensive community participation. Volunteers, educators, and project partners recently took part in a three-day effort that included mural painting activities, library organization, and storytelling sessions designed to engage students and promote reading. The project has also attracted support from private-sector organizations, including Boysen, which donated paint materials, TOSOT, which sponsored air-conditioning systems, and Archispace Design Inc. along with JAS Design and Build Development Corp., which contributed to the facility's design and construction.

As construction progresses, the JHL-RSM Library project highlights the growing role of partnerships in advancing education initiatives, improving student literacy, and creating learning spaces that inspire future generations. Through continued collaboration with educational institutions, community organizations, and corporate partners, the Republic of San Marino's Consulate in the Philippines is helping expand educational opportunities and strengthen the foundation for lifelong learning among Filipino students.
