South Korea, France Establish Teaching Assistant Exchange Initiative

    • South Korea and France sign a formal agreement to launch a structured teaching assistant exchange program between the two countries
    • Initiative aims to strengthen language skills, provide global exposure, and create international learning opportunities for students
    • Program focuses on enhancing classroom learning, cultural understanding, and real-world communication skills through cross-cultural education

South Korea and France have taken a step to strengthen education ties by launching a teaching assistant exchange program. The initiative aims to enhance language learning, skill development, and cultural understanding among students in both countries.

The agreement was signed between Ministry of Education South Korea, the National Institute for International Education, Ministry of National Education France, and France Education International. The signing took place in Seoul during the state visit of Emmanuel Macron, marking 140 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Under the program, South Korea will send a teaching assistant to France for one year to support Korean language classes. In return, France will send a teaching assistant to South Korea. The exchange is set to begin in fall 2026, with plans to expand in the coming years.

The teaching assistants will work alongside full-time teachers in middle and high schools, helping students improve their language skills. They will not be responsible for managing classrooms or evaluating students, but will focus on supporting learning and cultural exchange.

Interest in Korean language education is growing in France. Korean is offered as an elective subject in the Baccalaureate exam, with over 1,800 students across 60 schools studying it as of 2025. Similarly, French is available as an optional subject in South Korea’s college entrance exam.

Officials say the program will give young people valuable international exposure while building practical language and communication skills.
