- Tokyo unveils an English-language portal for international schools.
- Aims to help global families access clear education information.
- Part of efforts to attract skilled professionals to the city.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched a new English-language international school portal to make it easier for global families to find education options in Japan’s capital. The move is part of Tokyo’s broader goal to attract and retain international talent and strengthen its position as a global financial and business hub.
The online platform offers a comprehensive database of international schools, featuring details such as location, class size, curriculum, capacity, and tuition fees. It was developed after discussions with parents, who said they struggled to find reliable school information online.
“Tokyo aims to create an environment where foreign professionals and their families can live and work comfortably”, officials said, adding that the portal will be available in English and Japanese only. The government plans to expand content and listings over time.
Currently, there are 62 international schools in Tokyo, covering British, German, French, Canadian, and Indian curricula. These schools are popular not only among expatriate families but also among Japanese parents seeking English education and flexible curricula.
Tuition at international schools generally ranges from ¥1 million to ¥3 million per year, while boarding options can reach ¥10 million.

Officials also plan to support international schools looking to expand or enter Tokyo’s market, with new assistance programs set to launch in late November, including market research and development support.
This initiative underscores Tokyo’s commitment to improving its education ecosystem and making the city more welcoming for global professionals and their families.
