UK-Indonesia Launch Maritime Skills, Education Partnership

    • The UK and Indonesia have jointly launched a maritime-focused skills and education program aimed at strengthening workforce capabilities and supporting long-term industry growth
    • The initiative includes scholarships and partnerships between leading universities to enhance training, research opportunities, and practical learning aligned with industry needs
    • It focuses on creating job-ready talent by improving skills, encouraging innovation, and preparing students and professionals for careers in the maritime and industrial sectors

The UK and Indonesia have launched a new Maritime Partnership Programme (MPP) aimed at strengthening education, skills, and workforce development in the maritime sector. The initiative was introduced in Jakarta through a collaboration between Babcock International Group, the British Embassy, and Indonesian partners.

The program focuses on building job-ready talent by connecting education with industry needs. A key highlight is the funding of 30 Chevening Scholarships over three years for Indonesian students. These scholarships will support future leaders in maritime and industrial sectors through advanced studies in the UK.

In addition, a consortium of six universities from both countries will work together to improve maritime education and research. The partnership includes leading institutions from the UK and Indonesia, aiming to create new learning opportunities, innovation projects, and skill-building programs aligned with industry demands.

The initiative also supports workforce training through collaborations in shipbuilding, naval technology, and industrial development. These efforts are designed to equip students and professionals with practical skills and exposure to real-world maritime operations.

Officials say the program will help create more job opportunities while strengthening Indonesia’s position as a growing maritime hub. It also reflects a broader effort to connect education systems with economic growth and industry needs.

The MPP builds on a larger UK-Indonesia partnership announced earlier, reinforcing long-term cooperation in skills, training, and technology transfer. By combining education, research, and industry collaboration, the program aims to prepare the next generation for careers in a rapidly evolving maritime sector.
