A new chapter in higher education collaboration is unfolding in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC) at the University of Macau (UM) officially established a friendship-college partnership with Harmonia College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen). The agreement reflects a growing commitment among leading universities in the region to strengthen cross-border educational partnerships, enhance student development, and promote global learning opportunities through meaningful academic and cultural exchange.
The partnership was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding on educational cooperation by Yang Liu, college master of MLC, and Simon Pun, acting college master of Harmonia College. Education leaders from both institutions described the collaboration as an important milestone that will create broader opportunities for students and deepen ties between two influential residential college systems in Asia.
Yang Liu emphasized that MLC has long been committed to advancing whole-person education, a learning philosophy that goes beyond classroom instruction by focusing on intellectual growth, leadership development, cultural understanding, social responsibility, and personal well-being. As a central part of the University of Macau’s residential college system, MLC aims to cultivate versatile graduates with strong international perspectives and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing global environment. According to Yang, the new partnership with Harmonia College represents a significant step toward expanding regional educational cooperation and supporting the long-term development of innovative education models within the Greater Bay Area.
Simon Pun highlighted that the relationship between the two colleges has already produced a vibrant range of exchange activities over the past several years. He noted that sports and student engagement have become some of the strongest connecting forces between the institutions, helping students build friendships, teamwork skills, and mutual respect. Through athletic competitions, cultural exchanges, and student-led activities, participants from both colleges have developed stronger interpersonal connections while learning from each other’s unique educational experiences and campus cultures.

Students participating in the exchanges consistently demonstrated openness, collaboration, and enthusiasm, qualities that were widely praised by faculty members and peers from both universities. Their active involvement helped establish a strong foundation of trust and mutual understanding, ultimately paving the way for the official friendship-college partnership.
The collaboration is expected to significantly expand opportunities for students in both Macau and Shenzhen. Moving forward, the colleges plan to strengthen cooperation in areas such as sports and healthy living, global humanities, arts and culture, technological innovation, and the development of interdisciplinary talent. By integrating academic learning with extracurricular experiences, the partnership aims to prepare students with the critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills needed in today’s interconnected world.
