- Malaysia’s first immersive VR and AI lab introduced to modernise veterinary education and training
- Strong focus on hands-on skill development, safe simulation-based learning, and industry-ready graduates
- Advanced, technology-driven learning model designed to improve long-term employability and career outcomes
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has taken a major step toward modernising veterinary education with the launch of Malaysia’s first Bionic Immersive Lab, a cutting-edge facility powered by virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). The lab aims to strengthen practical skills, decision-making, and professional readiness among veterinary students and practitioners.
Developed in collaboration with G Plus Tech Sdn Bhd, the lab allows students to practise clinical procedures and problem-solving in a fully simulated environment. This approach reduces dependence on live animals, field visits, and physical clinical settings, while offering a safer and more flexible learning experience.
The launch was officiated by Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim. G Plus Tech CEO Dr Nurliza Md Azzam said the initiative supports self-directed learning, enabling students to repeat procedures, build confidence, and adopt technology-driven skills that align with future jobs.
Dean of UPM’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Dr Goh Yong Meng, highlighted that the lab helps overcome challenges such as limited resources, safety concerns, biosecurity risks, and time constraints common in traditional training. Students can now learn anytime and anywhere without exposure to disease or physical hazards.

Research shared by G Plus Tech shows VR-based training can significantly improve skill retention and surgical performance compared to conventional methods. While the lab currently focuses on veterinary science, the technology has potential applications across medicine, TVET, science, defence, and architecture.
UPM and G Plus Tech plan to expand immersive learning content and seek broader support to scale the initiative, strengthening skills development and workforce readiness in Malaysia.
