U.S. Embassy Jakarta Launches Teacher Training For English Education

    The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta has launched a teacher training initiative focused on improving English language education in Indonesia.     The Practical English for Young Learners (PEYL) initiative was officially launched in Denpasar, Bali, as a two-week intensive teacher development program designed to strengthen early English education in Indonesia. The program is jointly organized by the Regional English Language Office (RELO), U.S. Embassy Jakarta in collaboration with the University of Indonesia, particularly its Faculty of Humanities, underlining a strong international and academic partnership aimed at improving foundational language instruction.

    The training, held from May 10 to May 23, supports the Government of Indonesia’s plan to reintroduce English as a compulsory subject starting from Grade 3 in primary schools, marking a significant shift in primary school English education policy.

    At its core, the PEYL program focuses on empowering educators through English teacher training Indonesia initiatives that go beyond language proficiency. It emphasizes that effective instruction for young learners depends equally on strong pedagogical skills, creativity in lesson delivery, and the ability to create engaging, activity-based classrooms. Teachers are guided to adopt student-centered learning English approaches that encourage participation, curiosity, and confidence among young students, especially those encountering English for the first time in formal schooling.

    Speaking on the program’s broader significance, a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy Jakarta highlighted that English serves as an essential gateway to global knowledge, opportunity, and cross-cultural communication. The spokesperson emphasized that improving teachers’ classroom techniques will ultimately enhance students’ language acquisition while also fostering enthusiasm and active engagement in learning environments, aligning with long-term goals of teacher capacity building Indonesia.

    Indonesian education officials also expressed strong support for the initiative. Representatives from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Indonesia noted that PEYL complements ongoing national programs aimed at strengthening teacher competency, particularly in early-grade English instruction. Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Indonesia stressed that the program equips teachers at SD, MI, and Ula levels with practical strategies, integrating technology and interactive teaching tools to make English learning more enjoyable and accessible for students across diverse educational settings.

    The program is structured into two cohorts. The first group includes 51 primary school teachers from both the education and religious affairs sectors in Indonesia, alongside four educators from the country of Timor-Leste. The second group consists of 41 trainers, including education specialists, regional facilitators, university lecturers, and members of English teacher associations. Each participant completes 40 hours of intensive training focused on Practical English for Young Learners (PEYL) methodologies, after which they are expected to conduct cascading workshops in their respective regions, ensuring wider dissemination of effective teaching practices.

    Participants have described the experience as transformative. One teacher from MIN 1 Kota Malang shared that the program provided practical insights into active learning strategies and the innovative use of visual and interactive teaching aids. She expressed strong motivation to apply these techniques in her classroom and further share them with fellow educators within the Ministry of Religious Affairs network, reinforcing the program’s multiplier impact.

    Overall, the PEYL initiative represents a collaborative effort to modernize early English instruction through global expertise and local commitment. By combining academic support, government policy alignment, and hands-on training, the program is expected to significantly strengthen English language teaching in Indonesia, ultimately benefiting thousands of young learners as trained educators expand these methods across schools nationwide.
