Zayed University & KAIST Launch Dual Campus for Education Innovation

Zayed University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have formally launched the KAIST–ZU Dual Campus Initiative, a long-term strategic platform designed to deepen collaboration between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea across education, research, entrepreneurship, and technology-driven innovation.

The initiative creates a structured knowledge and innovation bridge that brings together Zayed University’s focus on developing future-ready talent with KAIST’s internationally recognised strengths in science, technology, and research. Officials described the partnership as a practical step toward positioning the UAE as a global hub for advanced knowledge, future industries, and cross-border innovation.

In its first phase, the Dual Campus Initiative will be built around three flagship programmes that establish the operational foundations of the platform.

The first is the KAIST–ZU Joint Research Institute. This institute will serve as the long-term institutional home for sustained research and innovation collaboration between the two universities. It is expected to support knowledge exchange, joint research projects, and the translation of research outcomes into practical applications and commercial opportunities.

The second programme focuses on Joint Research Workshops and Faculty Collaboration. Academic teams from both institutions will be connected around national priorities and emerging fields of importance to the UAE and Korea. The workshops will encourage the development of joint research proposals, deepen faculty exchange, and create a pipeline of collaborative projects capable of addressing national, regional, and global challenges.

The third flagship programme is the KAIST–ZU Global Startup Hackathon. This initiative will bring together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and mentors from both countries to develop technology-driven solutions for global challenges and future industry opportunities. By combining interdisciplinary teamwork with entrepreneurial support, the hackathon aims to help participants test ideas, build viable prototypes, and explore pathways toward startup creation and commercial impact.

Prof. Kevin Hall, President and Chief Executive Officer of Zayed University, emphasised that the partnership reflects the university’s belief that the future of higher education depends on meaningful global collaboration.

“By bringing together Zayed University’s commitment to developing future-ready talent with KAIST’s internationally recognised excellence in science, technology and entrepreneurship, we are creating opportunities that extend far beyond our campuses,” he said. “Together, we will empower our students, researchers and faculty to transform ideas into real-world solutions and develop solutions with global relevance while strengthening the UAE’s position as a destination for innovation, discovery and talent".

Prof. Hyeon Yeo, Executive Chair of the KAIST Global Committee, described the initiative as a significant milestone.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone, bringing together two nations united by a shared commitment to innovation and sustainable advancement,” he stated. “By combining KAIST’s global research excellence with Zayed University’s vision for future-ready talent, we aim to create a platform where ideas, knowledge, and innovation can thrive.”

The Dual Campus Initiative aligns with Zayed University’s broader strategy to expand globally connected learning and strengthen its research and innovation capacity. At the same time, it deepens the strategic relationship between the UAE and the Republic of Korea by preparing graduates with the skills, international exposure, and innovation mindset required to contribute to future industries.

Officials noted that the partnership goes beyond traditional academic exchange. By linking research, entrepreneurship, and talent development under a single platform, the two universities aim to accelerate the movement of ideas from laboratory and classroom into practical applications that can support economic diversification and technological progress in both countries.

The Joint Research Institute is expected to become the central mechanism for long-term collaboration, while the workshops and faculty exchanges will build the human networks necessary for sustained joint work. The Global Startup Hackathon, meanwhile, is designed to inject entrepreneurial energy into the partnership and give students and young researchers direct experience in turning research insights into market-relevant solutions.

Observers see the initiative as part of a wider trend in which leading universities in the Gulf and East Asia are forming deeper, multi-dimensional partnerships rather than one-off exchange programmes. By combining Zayed University’s regional strengths with KAIST’s technological depth, the Dual Campus model seeks to create a durable framework that can evolve over time and generate measurable outcomes in research quality, student experience, and innovation capacity.

The launch of the first-phase programmes signals the practical beginning of this long-term collaboration. As the Joint Research Institute, faculty workshops, and startup hackathon take shape, both institutions are expected to expand opportunities for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to work across borders on challenges of shared importance.

In doing so, the KAIST–ZU Dual Campus Initiative reinforces the UAE’s ambition to serve as a global meeting point for knowledge, advanced technology, and future-oriented talent, while strengthening its strategic ties with one of the world’s leading science and technology nations.
