Benguet Opens 158 Scholarship Slots for College Freshmen

    • Benguet offers 158 scholarships for incoming college freshmen in AY 2025–2026, including slots for barangays, ALS graduates, and achievers in sports or skills.
    • The program covers tuition, allowances, and book support, with future plans to double barangay slots to expand access for deserving students.
    • Additional medical scholarships offered per municipality aim to produce more rural doctors and strengthen healthcare across Benguet.

The Benguet provincial government has offered 158 scholarship seats for incoming first-year college students for Academic Year 2025-2026, Governor Melchor Diclas announced.

"A total of 158 scholarship seats are now available for incoming first-year college students under the Provincial Government of Benguet scholarship program", Diclas said in a phone interview.

Of this number, 140 will be assigned to every barangay of the province and 18 will be reserved for Alternative Learning System (ALS) graduates one for every Department of Education (DepEd) district, and four for students who have given Benguet pride in sports or technical skills.

Those who applied for the barangay slots are required to send their requirements to their barangay offices, ALS scholars to the DepEd district offices, and special achievers to the Governor's Office directly.

Diclas added that doubling the barangay slots to two per barangay is next school year's plan by the provincial government in order to cater to more poor but deserving students.

"The scholarship program provides financial allowances, tuition fee, and book assistance. This is an investment of the long term in our youth and province. An educated populace is the key to our growth", he declared.

Apart from this, the province provides scholarships for incoming freshmen who are studying medicine one per municipality, on a qualification basis – to meet the demands of more doctors in rural areas. The barrios require more doctors, said Diclas, a medical doctor himself.

He explained the provincial scholarship program for medical students is intended to achieve the target of having a doctor for every municipality by funding the studies of future doctors.

"Health is a vital aspect of life and we believe that through investing on the education of our children, we will be able to generate more medical professionals who will assist us in ensuring good health for our people", the governor said.
