Academia Launches Dedicated IB English Department in Singapore

  • Academia Pte Ltd, a leading English and Literature tuition centre, has officially launched its dedicated International Baccalaureate (IB) Department to meet the rising demand for specialised IBDP English training in Singapore.

The announcement, made on 20 July 2026, marks a strategic expansion aimed at supporting the growing number of students enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) across the city-state’s 41 IB World Schools. With more than 4,500 students sitting for IBDP examinations annually, the new department focuses on delivering structured, assessment-aligned preparation for IB English Language & Literature and IB English Literature subjects.

The programme targets Diploma Programme Year 1 and Year 2 students and emphasises mastery of core assessment components: Paper 1 (unseen textual analysis of literary, non-literary, and multimodal texts), Paper 2 (comparative literary analysis), and the Individual Oral (IO). Optional guidance for the Extended Essay is also available for students seeking comprehensive support.

Classes are conducted in small groups of 6 to 10 students to ensure personalised feedback and active engagement. Each 12-week term consists of two-hour weekly sessions held at convenient locations Tanglin Community Club (Whitley Road) and Upper Thomson. Rolling intake is now open, allowing families to enrol at any time.

Singapore continues to produce outstanding IB results globally. In the November 2024 examinations, Singapore students achieved an average score of 38.4 points, well above the world average of 29.2 points. An IB score above 38 is widely considered equivalent to three A grades at A-Level. Within this high-achieving environment, strong performance in IB English often becomes a decisive factor for students targeting 6 or 7 in the subject and overall top-band Diploma scores.

Academia’s IB Department adopts a component-based approach grounded in official IB marking criteria. Students receive systematic training in critical literacy, rhetorical analysis, comparative argumentation, and the translation of analytical ideas into high-scoring written and oral responses under timed conditions. The curriculum incorporates a wide range of global literary and non-literary texts to build intellectual depth and analytical range.

Mr Azrael Tseng, an educator with over 20 years of teaching experience, heads the new department. His background includes seven years with Singapore’s Ministry of Education and extensive work in international school IB environments. Tseng has guided numerous students to the maximum 45-point IB Diploma score, bringing proven expertise to the programme.

“Our goal is to equip IB students with repeatable methods and metacognitive strategies that help them excel under the unique pressures of the IB assessment format,” Tseng said. “We focus not only on content mastery but also on building confidence and structured thinking processes essential for top performance".

The launch reflects a broader trend among IB families seeking tuition specifically tailored to IB standards rather than generic English programmes. Academia’s established reputation as Singapore’s top-performing English, Literature, and General Paper tuition centre provides a strong foundation for this expansion. The centre has built its methodology by combining clarity and structure from the local curriculum with strategies drawn from leading global universities and liberal arts colleges.

Parents and students can expect small-class intimacy that allows for detailed feedback on writing, sustained discussion of complex texts, and targeted exam skills development. The performance-focused training addresses a common challenge faced by many capable IB students: converting strong ideas into consistently high-mark responses within strict time limits.

The dedicated IB Department is now accepting enrolments for immediate start. Families interested in IB English tuition Singapore can visit Academia’s website or contact the centre directly for class schedules and programme details.

This strategic move positions Academia as a comprehensive partner for IBDP success, particularly for families aiming for competitive university placements where strong IB English results carry significant weight.

With Singapore’s continued emphasis on academic excellence and the growing popularity of the IB Diploma, the launch of this specialised department comes at an opportune time. It offers a structured pathway for students to maximise their potential in one of the most demanding components of the IB programme.
