The high-level meeting saw the participation of education ministers from Asean member states, Timor Leste, senior representatives from Myanmar, and the Asean Secretariat. Notable attendees included Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, Brunei’s Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr. Romaizah Mohd Salleh, and Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto.
One of the key highlights of the roundtable will be the endorsement of the Asean Leaders' Declaration on Higher Education: Towards an Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous Asean. This declaration will serve to become a central roadmap to direct and drive higher education cooperation in the region for the next decade.
The roundtable is part of the larger #EduRoundtables2025 initiative a series of education-themed activities from Tuesday to Thursday on the picturesque resort island.
Malaysia is hosting the event under its 2025 Asean Chairmanship, which is 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. It also hosted the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits from May 23–26 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. This is Malaysia's fifth time holding the chairmanship, having done so in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
