The Ateneo de Manila University Confucius Institute (CI-Ateneo), with Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), organized and conducted a successful teacher training program for the professional upgrading of Chinese language teachers from the Philippines and Vietnam. Funded by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), the program facilitated the meeting of Filipino and Vietnamese teachers in an intensive academic and cultural immersion aimed at further bolstering Chinese language instruction in Southeast Asia.
The training took place at SYSU's Guangzhou campus in China, where the six Philippine teachers joined their Vietnamese counterparts to attend a series of lectures and workshops. SYSU's Department of Chinese Language and Literature faculty members led the training sessions, presenting different subjects concerning Chinese language teaching and cultural education. The course not only emphasized language skills and teaching methodologies but also provided participants with a more refined understanding of Chinese cultural backgrounds, which are most relevant in providing effective language teaching to students back home.
Among the visiting lecturers was Professor Zhou Xiaobing, a professor at both SYSU and Beijing Language and Culture University. Professor Zhou's lectures focused on teaching methodologies for Chinese culture and culturally responsive teaching material creation. His views centered on the integration of culture into language instruction to foster more interactive and productive learning environments.

The two-week project was also a venue for Filipino and Vietnamese teachers to share ideas, discuss classroom practices, and establish professional networks transcending national boundaries. Through this collaborative project, CI-Ateneo and SYSU proved that they share a common interest in enhancing the quality of Chinese language instruction in the region, consonant with CLEC's larger objectives of developing cross-cultural understanding and international academic cooperation.
The program's success underscores the increasing significance of regional collaboration in the development of educators and signals a strategic commitment to the long-term development of Chinese language education in the Philippines and Vietnam.
