DepEd urges Leaders to Prioritize Education Programs

    • The Department of Education has called on newly-elected leaders to prioritize education
    • Education Secretary Sonny Angara expressed gratitude to over 600,000 teachers
    • The DepEd also announced plans to strengthen four summer programs

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday called on the nation's newly-elected leaders to put education programs at the forefront, as it also expressed its gratitude to teachers who served in this year's midterm elections.

In a statement, Education Secretary Sonny Angara stated that education programs should be at the "front and center" of all.

"Now we have new senators, governors, mayors some veteran, some young and ambitious, all entering the ring of public service. They bring with them the aspirations of our people. But hope is not enough," Angara said in a message read by his undersecretary during an event.

"The Midterm elections are over, but the serious work of nation-building goes on. We invite everyone to be an education champion," he said.

Meanwhile, the education secretary praised more than 600,000 teachers and DepEd personnel who were among the election workers.

"Our teachers again became frontliners of democracy. Their professionalism, poise under pressure, and abiding sense of service are lessons we can all learn from," he said.

DepEd previously announced that it would enforce four summer programs more strongly in May in an effort to enhance foundational skills of learners across all levels.

The agency identified the Bawat Bata Makababasa Program (BBMP), Literacy Remediation Program (LRP), Summer Academic Remedial Program, and Learning Camp (LC) as included in this. DepEd explained that the four programs would emphasize focused instruction, volunteer mobilization, learner's welfare, and community participation.
