Deputy Prime Minister Confirms No Reverse on Medical Student Dismissals: South Korea

  • Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Joo Ho-young said on the 5th, "Every university should verify the subjects of dismissal and retention by the 7th and deal with them according to principle," adding, "Confirmed dismissals or retention will not be withdrawn or revoked."

The Deputy Prime Minister made this remark when issuing a message on the academic affairs of medical students for the 2025 academic year, indicating, "There have been false statements circulating among some of the medical students, and I want to rectify them."

It has been noted that although the government has asked all medical schools to report the latest status of dismissals and retentions by the 7th, there are allegations among certain medical students that individual universities are not able to implement mass dismissals or retentions, or that even if they are retained or dismissed, they can get back through subsequent academic flexibility mechanisms.

The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated, "I confirm again that there will be no further academic flexibility," declaring, "If vacancies occur due to dismissals from non-return, the government will assist each university to smoothly carry out transfer admissions to fill the vacancies."

He added, "On the 7th, the goal for the academic year 2025 will be decided, and the government will now work in close coordination with universities so that students returning would get normal academic assistance and student protection measures would be implemented firmly."

He also appealed to the students who have already returned to classes to have confidence in the government and their universities and concentrate on their studies. He continuously appealed to the students who are still not confident enough to come back not to risk their precious future as medical personnel due to unsubstantiated rumors.
