Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) revealed that it would be partnering with the University of Tokyo to establish an AI education program that is geared towards the improvement of digital knowledge and skillset among Indonesians. This move is designed to promote the development of AI-driven solutions that tackle different social problems.
The collaboration was announced after the meeting between Deputy Minister Nezar Patria and Professor Yutaka Matsuo on April 29, 2025, at the Jakarta Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). During the meeting, the Deputy Minister emphasized the potentiality of the program to address burning social issues via the implementation of AI technologies. He compared it with Japan's thriving AI education system, which has played a significant role in supporting innovative startups and the development of the tech environment.
Through the adoption of this curriculum, Indonesia hopes to provide its labor force with the required skills needed to prosper in an increasingly digital economy. Working together with the University of Tokyo will see Indonesia tap into Japan's knowledge of AI education, hence playing a critical role in Indonesia's digital economy growth and the development of a new generation of technologically oriented individuals who can propel innovation and development in the region.
