Japan Launches LOTUS Program for 1000+ Indian Researchers

    • Japan launches the LOTUS Program FY2026 to strengthen academic collaboration with India, targeting over 1,000 Indian researchers.
    • The program offers two tracks: LOTUS Basic (up to 12 months) and LOTUS-ASPIRE (up to 36 months) in fields like AI, Biotechnology, Quantum Technology, and semiconductors.
    • Selected participants receive a stipend of ₹1.4 lakh/month, access to top Japanese labs, and opportunities for industry internships; applications close on June 9, 2026.

Japan has taken a significant step to strengthen academic collaboration with India by officially opening applications for the LOTUS Program FY2026. This ambitious initiative is designed to bring over 1,000 Indian researchers, including Master’s students, PhD scholars, and Postdoctoral fellows, into high-impact research environments at some of Japan’s most prestigious institutions.

By focusing on rapidly evolving and transformative fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Quantum Technology, and semiconductors, the program seeks to nurture the next generation of global innovators and thought leaders. The 2026 edition of the LOTUS (Long-Term Opportunity for Trainees and University Students) Program introduces a structured approach to research collaboration. The LOTUS Basic track offers a short-term engagement of up to 12 months, enabling participants to build foundational academic networks and gain early-stage guidance through joint supervision.

For researchers seeking a more intensive experience, the new LOTUS-ASPIRE track provides up to 36 months of residency, with enhanced funding, regular progress assessments, and the opportunity to produce high-level research outcomes. Selected candidates will receive a generous monthly stipend of approximately ₹1.4 lakh, covering living expenses and accommodation, along with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and potential industry internships. While the program offers extensive support within Japan, travel costs from India are expected to be borne by the home institutions.

To be eligible, applicants must be affiliated with an institution and under the age of 40. Independent applications are not permitted; instead, submissions must come through a Principal Investigator at the hosting Japanese institution. The application window closes on June 9, 2026, with final selections expected by late August.

For Indian researchers, this program represents a rare opportunity to gain international exposure, collaborate with leading experts, and contribute to cutting-edge advancements that could shape the technological landscape globally. The LOTUS Program FY2026 stands as a testament to the growing academic partnership between India and Japan, offering aspiring researchers a platform to transform their ideas into meaningful innovations on the world stage.
