Sejong University Expands Korean Language Education Hub in Macao

  • Sejong University is expanding Korean language education and international exchanges through its partnership in operating the first King Sejong Institute in Macao.

The university held a signboard unveiling ceremony for the King Sejong Institute Macao at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) on 9 October, Hangeul Day. It is the first King Sejong Institute operated in partnership with Sejong University.

In June, Sejong University and MUST were selected to participate in the 2026 program supporting the establishment of new King Sejong Institutes. The King Sejong Institute Foundation designates overseas institutions that offer Korean language and cultural education as King Sejong Institutes and supports their operations by dispatching instructors, providing curricula and teaching materials, and organizing cultural programs.

King Sejong Institutes operate either independently under local institutions or jointly with Korean institutions and overseas diplomatic missions. The program aims to strengthen the foundation for Korean language education abroad and provide local learners with systematic Korean language instruction and opportunities to experience Korean culture.

The two universities jointly established the King Sejong Institute Macao, which began offering three pilot classes last month. The institute plans to launch full-scale operations after signing a formal agreement with the King Sejong Institute Foundation early next year.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Sejong University officials, including Hong Seong-kyung, senior vice president for administrative and external affairs; Lee Chung-hun, vice president for international affairs; Lee Chang-seop, director of the Sejong Institute of Language; and Shim Ji-young, a professor of Korean language and literature.

MUST Vice President Chen Yong also attended the event, along with representatives from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, Macao government agencies, and the institute’s first cohort of students, faculty and staff.

In his address, Chen expressed his gratitude to Sejong University for its efforts to establish the King Sejong Institute Macao. He said, “I hope the institute will further strengthen international education cooperation between the two universities and expand exchanges among students and faculty.”

“It is particularly meaningful to mark the launch of the institute on Hangeul Day,” Hong said. “We will actively support the institute in establishing itself as a hub for promoting the Korean language and culture and fostering exchanges between Korea and Macao, where diverse cultures coexist.”

Before the unveiling ceremony, the two universities signed a student exchange agreement outlining the terms of their cooperation. The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed last year, further expanding their academic collaboration.

Sejong University noted that demand for Korean language education is strong in Macao, where tourism and cultural industries play a major role and close ties with Hong Kong and Zhuhai facilitate regional exchanges. The King Sejong Institute Macao is expected to serve as a hub for Korean language education and cultural exchange across the Greater China region.

The establishment of the institute represents a strategic step in Sejong University’s broader internationalization efforts. By partnering with MUST, the university gains a physical presence in a dynamic location that connects mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. This positioning allows the King Sejong Institute to attract learners not only from Macao but also from neighboring areas where interest in Korean language and culture continues to grow.

The pilot classes already underway provide an early indication of local interest. These initial sessions allow the institute to refine teaching approaches, assess learner needs and prepare for the transition to full-scale operations once the formal agreement with the King Sejong Institute Foundation is finalized. Support from the Foundation in the form of dispatched instructors, standardized curricula and teaching materials will help ensure consistent quality aligned with global King Sejong Institute standards.

The student exchange agreement signed alongside the unveiling ceremony adds another layer of academic cooperation. Beyond language instruction, the two universities are creating pathways for students and faculty to engage in reciprocal mobility. Such exchanges can deepen mutual understanding, support joint academic projects and strengthen long-term institutional ties.

Macao’s unique environment makes it a particularly suitable location for a King Sejong Institute. As a city shaped by tourism, hospitality and cultural industries, it offers natural demand for Korean language skills among residents and professionals who interact with Korean visitors or engage with Korean cultural content. Proximity to Hong Kong and Zhuhai further amplifies the institute’s potential reach, enabling it to function as a regional resource rather than a purely local one.

The choice of Hangeul Day for the signboard unveiling carried symbolic weight. Marking the launch on the day that celebrates the Korean alphabet underscores the institute’s core mission of promoting the Korean language and the cultural heritage associated with it. Officials from both universities highlighted this timing as meaningful for the start of a new chapter in educational cooperation.

Looking ahead, the successful transition from pilot classes to full operations will depend on continued coordination between Sejong University, MUST and the King Sejong Institute Foundation. Infrastructure, staffing, curriculum delivery and cultural programming will all require careful planning and sustained support. The presence of representatives from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and Macao government agencies at the ceremony signals official interest in the institute’s success.

For Sejong University, the Macao institute adds to its portfolio of international partnerships and reinforces its role in advancing Korean language education abroad. For MUST, the collaboration brings specialized expertise in Korean language teaching and opens new avenues for student and faculty engagement with Korea. Together, the partners are creating a platform that serves local learners while contributing to broader cultural and educational exchange in the region.

The King Sejong Institute Macao stands as a concrete outcome of the 2026 support program for new institutes. Its development from selection in June to pilot classes and a formal unveiling on Hangeul Day demonstrates steady progress. As it moves toward full-scale operations early next year, the institute is positioned to become a lasting hub for Korean language learning and intercultural dialogue in Macao and beyond.
