Vietnam Shines with 1 Gold, 2 Silver at 2026 Asia-Pacific Math Olympia

  • Vietnam has celebrated the achievements of its students who excelled at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO), securing one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in the country’s first participation in 25 years.

On July 9, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) held a ceremony to honor the seven medal-winning students for their remarkable performances.

The 2026 APMO was held simultaneously on March 10 across Vietnam and 45 other countries and territories. Vietnam fielded a team of 22 contestants, including two members of the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad team and 20 first-prize winners from the 2025–2026 National Excellent Student Competition.

After the examination, Vietnam submitted the results of its top 10 scorers to the international jury. The country ultimately received one gold medal, two silver medals, four bronze medals, and three honorable mentions the maximum number of awards allowed under APMO regulations.

This achievement placed Vietnam 7th among the 43 official participating countries and territories. The strong result marks a successful return to the competition after a 25-year absence. Starting this year, Vietnam will serve as the coordinating host country for the APMO for three consecutive years (2026–2028).

The Ministry of Education and Training assigned VIASM, in cooperation with the Vietnam Mathematical Society, to organize the 2026 edition of the competition in Vietnam.

Gold Medalist: Tran Dai Thanh Danh, a Grade 12 student from the High School for the Gifted at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, won Vietnam’s only gold medal with an impressive score of 27 points.

    Silver Medalists:

    • Pham Dang Nguyen, Grade 12, Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted (25 points)
    • Nguyen Hoang Phuong, Grade 11, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An Province (25 points)

    Bronze Medalists:

    • Phan Thanh Huy, Grade 12, Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted
    • Tran Anh Quan, Grade 12, Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Dien Bien
    • Nguyen Dinh Tung, Grade 12, High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University Hanoi
    • Nguyen Bao Khanh, Grade 11, Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa Province
    • Three other students received honorable mentions: Luu Trong Phuc, Bui Nhat Minh, and Vo Sy Quoc Anh.

The outstanding performance underscores the high quality of Vietnam’s gifted mathematics education system and the effectiveness of its national training programs for talented students. The results also reflect the growing strength of Vietnam’s mathematical talent pool on the regional stage.

VIASM and education leaders expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments, viewing them as a promising sign for Vietnam’s continued success in future international mathematics competitions.

With Vietnam now serving as the coordinating host for the APMO from 2026 to 2028, the country is expected to play an even more significant role in promoting mathematical excellence across the Asia-Pacific region in the coming years.
