SOAS University of London has announced the 2026-2027 Teaching Scholarships, offering fully funded doctoral opportunities for students pursuing full-time MPhil and PhD programmes. This initiative is part of the university’s ongoing commitment to addressing inequalities in access to higher education, particularly for Black British students and those based in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The scholarships aim not only to support advanced research but also to cultivate future academics who are committed to making meaningful contributions to their communities.
Recipients of the SOAS Teaching Scholarship will benefit from comprehensive financial support, including full tuition coverage and a maintenance stipend, expected to be at least £20,622 for the 2026/2027 academic year. Beyond financial support, scholars will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience during their doctoral studies, an invaluable component for those seeking careers in academia. The programme also includes access to academic training and professional development, supporting students throughout a three-year full-time research programme.

The scholarships are designed to promote diversity and representation in doctoral education. Applicants are encouraged to submit a widening participation statement detailing personal or structural challenges they have faced in accessing higher education, such as growing up in a low-income household, being a first-generation university student, or living with disabilities. The statement should also explain the applicant’s motivation for studying at SOAS University of London and how the scholarship would help them achieve their career goals, as well as the expected impact of their research on their community or region.
Eligible applicants include Black British students, as well as students ordinarily resident in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East. A special allocation is also reserved for Palestinian nationals. Applicants must have an offer to study a full-time MPhil or PhD programme at SOAS and meet English language requirements by May 10, 2026. The selection process combines academic merit with an assessment of alignment with the scholarship’s diversity and inclusion objectives, and decisions are expected by the end of May 2026.
This scholarship represents a unique opportunity for aspiring scholars to pursue rigorous academic research while gaining essential teaching experience, positioning them to contribute meaningfully to global knowledge on Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It is a step toward nurturing a more inclusive and equitable academic community at SOAS University of London and beyond.
