Dr. Azad Moopen's Legacy Empowers Kerala's Youth Through New Scholarship Initiative

    • Dr. Azad Moopen launches full-tuition scholarships for 25 deserving students annually across MBBS, BSc Nursing, and BPharm programs at his colleges in Wayanad, Kerala.
    • Dr. Moopen's Legacy Scholarship & Fellowships Programme is Kerala’s first 100% tuition-free initiative by a private medical college, aimed at empowering students from underprivileged backgrounds.
    • Over the next 5 years, 125 students will benefit, with a financial outlay exceeding ₹3 crore per year; applications open from July 28, 2025.

In a bid to help students hailing from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, Padma Shri Dr. Azad Moopen, Director and Chairman of Aster DM Healthcare, has declared the establishment of the Dr. Moopen's Legacy Scholarship and Fellowships Programme. The programme is designed to help deserving students gain admission at Dr. Moopen's Medical College, Dr. Moopen's Nursing College, and Dr. Moopen's College of Pharmacy in Wayanad, Kerala.

This initiative is a landmark achievement because it is for the first time when a private medical college in Kerala is providing 100% tuition fee exemption for meritorious medical students who deserve quality healthcare education and access to improved health care.

The 25 deserving students who are applying for MBBS, BSc Nursing, and BPharm will be given scholarships. Every year, 5 MBBS, 10 BSc Nursing, and 10 BPharm students will be given these scholarships. The selection of the MBBS scholarships will be merit-based only, identifying and rewarding students with excellent academic backgrounds and best NEET ranks. Although these students will get priority admission, this program is intended to give them extra credit.

For BSc Nursing and BPharm students, there will be both merit-based and need-based selection. The award will include full tuition fees, given that students have average academic performance and follow program guidelines. In the next five years, a total of 125 students will receive this benefit, with the financial commitment to exceed INR 3 crore per annum.

Dr. Azad Moopen added, "Education is the basis of a more inclusive and stronger society. I truly believe that no talented student should have to abandon such dreams because of economic reasons particularly in an area as critical as healthcare".

"The Dr. Moopen's Legacy Scholarship & Fellowships Programme is a formal and bigger commitment: not only to finance education, but to open up avenues that can change the lives of people, their families, and a whole community", said Dr Moopen.

Founded in 2012, Dr. Moopen's Medical College is Kerala's first medical college to be established in a hilly, tribal region, fulfilling the lack of quality healthcare while encouraging local communities, particularly tribal youngsters, to follow careers in medicine.

Dr. Moopen's Legacy Scholarship & Fellowships Programme guarantees that financial limitations do not obstruct bright minds. With approximately 900 junior doctors fostered in six batches, the college has been established as a viable center for medical learning, boasting experienced teachers, a library, a museum, and a hospital with tertiary care facilities.

Applications for the scholarship will be available from July 28, 2025.
