Bongaigaon Medical College in Assam has received formal permission from the National Medical Commission to begin its MBBS programme with an annual intake of 100 seats for the 2026-27 academic session.
The Letter of Permission was issued by the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board on August 31, 2026. The decision followed the college’s appeal against an earlier disapproval dated August 17. After the appeal process, the institution was cleared to start the undergraduate medical course.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the approval and noted that Bongaigaon Medical College will become the state’s 15th medical college. The addition expands Assam’s medical education capacity at a time when the state has been steadily increasing the number of institutions offering MBBS training.
The new seats will be available to candidates through the NEET UG counselling process. Students from Assam and other parts of the country will be able to seek admission once the formal counselling schedule is announced. The 100-seat intake represents a meaningful increase in available places and is expected to ease pressure on existing medical colleges in the region.
The approval comes after the college’s initial application was turned down. The subsequent appeal allowed the Medical Assessment and Rating Board to reconsider the submission, resulting in the Letter of Permission. Officials involved in the process have not released detailed reasons for the earlier disapproval or the factors that led to the successful appeal, but the final clearance confirms that the institution met the required standards for starting the MBBS programme.
Assam has prioritised the expansion of medical education infrastructure in recent years. The addition of Bongaigaon Medical College continues that trend and brings a new facility to a part of the state that previously lacked a dedicated medical college. Local students will now have an additional option closer to home, while the overall seat pool for the state and the national counselling process grows.
Chief Minister Sarma’s statement highlighted the significance of the 15th medical college status. Each new institution contributes to the state’s long-term goal of producing more doctors and improving access to medical training. The Bongaigaon campus is expected to begin operations for the 2026-27 session once all remaining administrative and academic preparations are completed.
Prospective students and parents will need to monitor the official NEET UG counselling notifications for details on seat matrix, reservation categories and counselling rounds. The 100 seats at Bongaigaon will form part of the overall All India and state quota distribution once the final allocation is confirmed by the relevant authorities.
The National Medical Commission’s role in assessing and granting permission remains central to maintaining standards across new and existing medical colleges. The Letter of Permission process involves evaluation of infrastructure, faculty, clinical facilities and other mandatory requirements. In this case, the appeal mechanism provided a pathway for the college to address earlier concerns and secure approval.
