Gulf Medical University’s College of Dentistry has established itself as a regional leader in clinical dental education, combining one of the largest training infrastructures in the UAE with rare international recognition. At its core is Thumbay Dental Hospital in Ajman, the university’s own accredited teaching hospital, which houses 120 clinical dental chairs.
This capacity removes the common bottleneck that forces students at many institutions to wait for clinical time, allowing GMU students to progress steadily through graded case complexity under specialist supervision from early in their training.
The scale of the facility means students treat real patients inside a functioning hospital rather than relying solely on limited clinic slots. Clinical depth, however, begins well before any patient contact. The College operates a dedicated preclinical clinical skills laboratory where every workstation features a phantom head supplied with running water and air.
This setup closely replicates the conditions of a live dental chair. Second- and third-year students master procedures, ergonomics, four-handed dentistry, lighting and full infection-control protocols in this environment so the transition to patient care becomes a natural progression rather than an abrupt leap.
This laboratory now forms part of Gulf Medical University’s integrated network of clinical skills and simulation centres, inaugurated in 2026 as the largest of its kind in the region. Six connected training facilities operate on the Ajman campus, including a dedicated Dental Simulation Centre and the multidisciplinary Thumbay Institute of Clinical Simulation. Students train in a virtually created hospital environment that deliberately allows mistakes to be made and corrected on simulators. The guiding principle is straightforward: patients encounter only competent hands.
Academic credentials reinforce the clinical infrastructure. In January 2024 the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme became the first undergraduate dental course in the UAE to receive accreditation from the Australian Dental Council, one of the most rigorous international benchmarks in the field. This recognition expands licensure and postgraduate opportunities for graduates globally. The BDS also holds full accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Education, the foundation for practice in the Emirates.
The clinical training and internship programme at Thumbay Dental Hospital carries a five-year accreditation from the National Institute of Health Specialties, awarded in March 2023. Together these credentials render a GMU dental qualification portable for practice, licensure and specialisation both regionally and internationally.
The five-year BDS programme itself is structured around clinical competence rather than classroom hours. Spanning 15 semesters and 200 credits, it follows a competency-based framework aligned with UAE national standards and international best practice. Students advance by demonstrating defined skills in diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative and surgical procedures, and patient management.
Assessment maps directly to the abilities a practising dentist must possess. Digital dentistry is embedded from the outset through the College’s Digital Dentistry Laboratory, established in 2023. Equipped with high-precision intraoral scanners, 3D printers and CAD/CAM systems, the laboratory takes students from digital diagnostics and treatment planning through to prosthetic fabrication. Partnerships with leading technology firms including exocad, Shofu and Alliedstar ensure graduates leave fluent in contemporary tools rather than outdated equipment.
What further distinguishes the College is the continuity of its clinical pathway. The BDS forms the foundation, followed by a structured one-year internship at Thumbay Dental Hospital. Postgraduate options include Master of Dental Surgery programmes in Periodontics, Endodontics and Orthodontics, plus dedicated residency programmes in Endodontics and Orthodontics.

A Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology and a Diploma for Dental Assistant complete the ladder. Students can therefore complete degree, internship and specialisation within the same hospital, faculty ecosystem and patient population an integrated progression that strengthens clinical judgement in ways fragmented pathways cannot match.
