Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the Centre has sanctioned 62 additional postgraduate seats in six state-run medical colleges and hospitals for the 2025-26 academic session. This decision marked a major milestone in the state's ongoing efforts to strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure, especially in the under-served regions of western Odisha.
In a letter to Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda, Chief Minister Majhi thanked the Ministry and termed the approval as a major development that would not only bring about improvement in medical education but also increase accessibility to special healthcare services. He said the Odisha government was committed to fulfilling all the norms and standards laid down by the NMC. Majhi assured that the State Government would provide all support to develop these institutes into centres of excellence in medical education to meet the changing healthcare requirements of the people.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared the distribution details on social media, stating that 62 new PG seats will be divided among six well-known medical institutions of the state. While Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla, will get 15 seats, SCB Medical College in Cuttack will get 3 seats, and PGIMER and Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar will get 6 seats.
Similarly, Pandit Raghunath Murmu (PRM) Medical College, Baripada, has been awarded 20 PG seats; Fakir Mohan (FM) Medical College, Balasore, will get 8 seats, and Bhima Bhoi Medical College, Bolangir, will get 10 seats. This increased intake will go a long way in boosting the capacity of these institutions to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The addition of new postgraduate seats will not only raise the quality of medical education but also facilitate better delivery of advanced healthcare services for the people of Odisha. The government is expecting an increase in specialists trained within the state to help address the growing demand for skilled medical professionals, as well as ensure better access to quality care both in rural and urban areas.
Chief Minister Majhi reiterated that this step is in line with the state's long-term vision to build robust healthcare systems through improvement in medical education and institutional development. The government is focused on infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and following the standards set by the NMC to create an enabling ecosystem that supports learning and excellence in clinical practices.
The clearance of the new PG seats by the Centre forms part of the national effort aimed at expanding medical education capacity across India in view of the urgent shortage of adequately trained specialists in the healthcare sector. In the case of Odisha, this represents an investment in its healthcare future that would go a long way in strengthening its medical colleges, thereby improving patient care and ensuring continued progress in public health outcomes.
