Angara Promotes Sustainable AI To Bridge Education Gaps

    • The Philippines’ Department of Education (DepEd) is accelerating digital transformation by integrating AI to streamline school operations and reduce workload for teachers and students.
    • Education Secretary Sonny Angara said AI will be used to automate administrative tasks and improve service delivery, especially for remote and underserved schools.
    • The initiative, supported by multiple government agencies, aims to modernize classrooms and strengthen a more efficient, technology-driven education system nationwide.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is advancing its push toward digital transformation as Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the government’s growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education to streamline school operations and ease the daily burden on teachers and students. Speaking at the 2026 National Innovation Day, Angara emphasized that AI should not be viewed as overly complex technology but as a practical tool that can bring meaningful improvements to education systems.

Under the theme 'AGOS ASEAN: AI for Growth, Opportunity, and Sustainability in ASEAN', the event showcased how emerging technologies are reshaping public services across Southeast Asia. Angara explained that DepEd’s AI integration initiatives are primarily designed to reduce administrative workload, improve efficiency in government service delivery, and ensure that educational support reaches schools faster, particularly those in remote and underserved communities.

He noted that by automating repetitive tasks and improving data management systems, AI can allow teachers to focus more on instruction and student engagement rather than paperwork. This shift, he said, is essential for building a more responsive and modern Philippine education system that keeps pace with global digital trends.

Angara also acknowledged the support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., crediting the administration’s broader innovation agenda for enabling stronger collaboration between key government agencies, including the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). This coordinated, whole-of-government approach is accelerating the country’s AI-driven digital transformation in education and skills development.

As the Philippines continues to invest in technology-enhanced learning, DepEd’s initiatives signal a long-term commitment to modernizing classrooms, empowering educators, and improving access to quality education through smart and sustainable innovation.
