South Korea’s international education scene is stepping into a new phase with the launch of a practical media literacy textbook designed to help learners decode everyday life through culture, news, and entertainment. Busan University of Foreign Studies has announced a newly published guide titled 'Understanding Korean Society through Media for International Students', created to make Korean society guide content more accessible for global learners, tourists, and foreign residents.

Developed by faculty members with journalism and Korean language education expertise, the book blends academic insight with real-world media examples. It explores 14 high-interest themes ranging from K-pop, K-dramas, and K-movies to essential aspects of daily life such as transportation, communication, healthcare, welfare, education, workplaces, and regional culture. Each chapter connects theory with practice by using curated news articles, expert video analyses, and drama clips, turning the book into a highly practical media literacy textbook for classrooms and self-study.

According to data cited from the Ministry of Education, foreign residents in South Korea reached over 2.58 million as of November 2024, while international university enrollment climbed to 253,424 by September 2025, marking a 21.3 percent year-on-year rise. This rapid growth highlights the rising demand for structured learning tools that help students understand Korean culture beyond language.

The guide also includes a vocabulary section explaining Korean terms in English, making it especially useful for beginners navigating both academic and daily environments. Educators say the resource can also support instructors teaching multicultural classrooms, offering a shared framework to discuss Korean society through media.

By combining entertainment, education, and cultural analysis, the book positions itself as a modern bridge between classrooms and real-life experiences, reflecting the growing global interest in studying and living in Korea.
