China Launches First-Ever Undergraduate Program in Pet Sciences

  • ·  China Agricultural University launches nation’s first 4-year undergraduate program in pet sciences.

    ·  Program focuses on companion animals like cats, dogs, and horses, awarding a degree in agricultural science.

    ·  Pet industry in China surpasses ¥300 billion in 2024, creating strong demand for trained professionals.

China Agricultural University (CAU) has formally initiated the nation's first undergraduate program centered on companion animals in response to the increasing need for qualified professionals working in the pet sector, according to CCTV News.

Provided by the university's College of Animal Science and Technology, the four-year course ends in a bachelor's degree in agricultural science. The curriculum covers topics like animal breeding, nutrition and metabolism, feed formulation, reproductive physiology, as well as the behavior and welfare of companion animals. The initial 50 students will be enrolled this year.

"Companion animals are living intimately with human beings, forming emotional ties and spreading joy to everyday life. Such is why the program is colloquially referred to as the 'pet' major," said Liu Guoshi, Vice-Dean of the College of Animal Science and Technology.

Liu stressed that the program was developed in light of market-driven needs, as the pet industry has emerged as a new growth engine for animal sciences. The profession increasingly demands professionals specialized in companion animal care and services.

"There's increasing demand for talent in universities, research institutions, vet clinics, and regulatory agencies dealing with pet welfare," Liu said.

One of the college's faculty members said that the program concentrates on animals like dogs, cats, and horses. Graduates can expect to find jobs with pet care firms, research organizations, and horse riding centers.

CAU has already had successful related programs, including a master's program in companion animals at its Yantai Institute in Shandong Province and a minor in companion animal science, both of which were received warmly.

China's urban canine and feline pet market totaled more than ¥300 billion ($41.79 billion) in 2024, up at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.9% for the past decade. China is home to more than 500,000 pet-related companies now, reflecting the enormity of the industry and the requirement for experts in particular fields.
