- City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is expanding academic and research collaboration with Sichuan Province, focusing on education, science, technology, and talent development.
- President Freddy Boey’s delegation visited Chengdu, strengthening ties with government, universities, and the CityUHK Chengdu Research Institute in fields like biomedical sciences, energy technology, and IP commercialization.
- The Chengdu Research Institute, a key CityUHK platform in western China, is advancing research translation, startup incubation, and projects such as innovative medical devices in partnership with local institutions.
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is working actively to develop extensive exchanges and collaboration with mainland China's academic and research centers, as well as cities, to build stronger academic networks and create mutual advantages.
Previously, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK Professor Freddy Boey led a delegation to visit Sichuan Province and discussed with a number of officials from the Sichuan Provincial and Chengdu Municipal Governments ways of enhancing collaboration. They also visited a number of universities and research institutes, inspected the CityUHK Chengdu Research Institute, and met with members of the CityUHK Sichuan alumni.
During the Chengdu visit, President Boey had an audience with Ms Shi Xiaolin, CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee Deputy Secretary and Governor of the People's Government of Sichuan Province. They shared perspectives on cultivating cooperation in education, science and technology, and talent development between Hong Kong and Sichuan and promoting mechanisms for enhanced collaboration, furthering advanced joint talent training, and promoting the transformation of research results. Ms Shi spoke of her hope to expand multi-level interaction between Sichuan and CityUHK and bring more world innovation resources to the province.
Subsequently, President Boey met with Mr Cao Lijun, Standing Committee Member of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee, as well as Mr Chen Yanfu, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee. Mr Cao expressed his gratitude to CityUHK for its support of Chengdu development and said the municipal government will keep supporting the development of the CityUHK Chengdu Research Institute and popularize local applications of scientific and technological accomplishments.

President Boey highlighted that Chengdu has a strong foundation in industry and innovation, and that CityUHK will tap into its strengths in internationalisation and research to further develop the Chengdu Research Institute. He further stated that the University will intensify collaboration with universities and institutions of Chengdu in fields of biomedical sciences, energy technology and intellectual property commercialization, with a view to strengthening research translation, talent mobility, and innovation and entrepreneurship development, thus making contributions to Chengdu's high-quality development.
The delegation also stopped by at the Chengdu Research Institute, which is in Shuangliu District, and had talks with Shuangliu District Government representatives on areas like research cooperation, technology transfer and incubation for startups. Since its opening in 2017, the Institute, with a combined floor area of more than 18,000 square metres, has become a key research and innovation platform for CityUHK in western China, facilitating applied research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship incubation.
The Research Institute just inked a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and successfully promoted an innovative medical device project into the first batch of pilot programmes for integrated innovative medical devices in Sichuan Province, showing evident advancement in technology application and research translation.
Moreover, the delegation visited a CityUHK Sichuan alumni gathering, during which they provided news of the University's latest developments and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Alumni were urged to remain active and assist in promoting education and research collaboration between Sichuan and Hong Kong for societal good.
