- The initiative will offer high quality, globally recognised education to up to 1,200 students and marks Exeter’s first major international institute.
The University of Exeter is expanding its global footprint with a major educational partnership in China. Working with Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT), Exeter will open a new Joint Education Institute in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province. The plan has now received formal approval from China’s Ministry of Education, moving the project into its next phase.
The institute will offer three undergraduate and two master’s degree programmes in fields critical to the global economy, engineering, data science, and digital media. The curriculum will integrate sustainability and digital innovation, helping students prepare for careers in a fast-evolving tech landscape.
This is Exeter’s first large scale transnational education venture and builds on more than a decade of collaboration with ZJUT. All degrees will meet Russell Group standards, the same level of academic excellence offered on Exeter’s UK campuses.

Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, said the institute reflects the university’s goal of delivering world class education internationally. “We’re preparing students with the global outlook and skills they need to lead in today’s world”, she noted.
ZJUT officials echoed this sentiment, calling the partnership a ‘world class collaboration’ that supports China’s innovation and international education goals.
The first cohort of students is expected to begin classes in September next year.
