Gyeonggi To Update Career Guidance Teacher Guidelines After 5 Years

    • Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans first major revision in five years to its guidelines for career guidance teachers to reduce administrative burden and clarify roles.
    • Revised framework will standardise duties, authority and training, including mandatory professional hours and clearer leadership roles within schools.
    • Changes aim to strengthen career education delivery, ensuring teachers can focus on student career development with long-term monitoring and support.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has announced plans to revise its 'Guidelines for the Placement and Operation of Career Guidance Teachers in Elementary and Secondary Schools' in the coming year, marking the first major update to the policy in five years. The revision is intended to address long-standing challenges faced by career guidance teachers, particularly the growing burden of administrative and support-related tasks, as well as persistent issues surrounding unclear authority and ambiguous role definitions within schools.

According to the provincial office, the updated guidelines aim to establish clearer institutional standards that will allow career guidance teachers to concentrate more effectively on their primary role of supporting students’ career development. The revision process has been informed by feedback from educators and other education stakeholders, alongside a comprehensive review of existing policies and on-the-ground practices across schools in the province.

One of the key objectives of the revision is to bring greater consistency to how career guidance roles are defined and implemented, regardless of a school’s size or level. In the past, responsibilities and authority often varied widely depending on institutional context, leading to confusion among school staff and uneven expectations for career guidance teachers. By clarifying common duties and formalising authority, the provincial office hopes to improve overall understanding and collaboration within schools.

Under the revised guidelines, elementary school career guidance teachers will be required to complete 30 hours of job-related training, strengthening their professional expertise and ensuring a more standardised level of competency. The revision also introduces clear principles for appointing career guidance teachers as department heads, recognising their leadership role in coordinating career education within schools. In addition, all subjects will be required to include at least two hours per semester of career-linked classes, reinforcing the integration of career education into the broader curriculum.

The updated guidelines further provide more detailed descriptions of career guidance teachers’ responsibilities, helping to reduce overlap with other roles and minimise non-essential administrative work. Access to the National Education Information System (NEIS) will also be expanded for career guidance purposes, enabling teachers to better support students through improved access to relevant data.

An official from the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education noted that the revised guidelines are expected to position career guidance teachers as specialised professionals who can oversee and coordinate career education in a more stable and systematic manner. By clearly defining their authority and responsibilities, the office believes the new framework will enhance the effectiveness of career education at the school level.

The provincial office has emphasised that the revision is not a one-time effort. Ongoing monitoring and continuous support will be provided to ensure that the updated guidelines are properly implemented and firmly embedded in school operations. Through these measures, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education aims to strengthen the foundation of career education and better equip students to plan and prepare for their future pathways.
