Hokkaido University took a significant step toward strengthening its international presence and partnerships by hosting the 'Hokkaido University 150 Initiative' in Singapore on November 3, as part of preparations for its 150th anniversary in 2026. Co-organized with the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, the event brought together more than 60 participants, including representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, Singaporean government agencies, local universities, private companies, and research institutions.
The gathering reflected the university’s growing emphasis on deeper engagement with Asia and served as a platform to share its long-term vision for research, education, and global collaboration. In his keynote address, Hokkaido University President Houkin spoke about the institution’s strategic priorities as it approaches its 150-year milestone. He highlighted sustainability as a core value that has shaped the university’s identity over decades and continues to guide its research and educational efforts.
“Our commitment to sustainability is not a recent development but a foundational principle of Hokkaido University”, President Houkin said. He explained that the university is actively advancing initiatives that connect academic research with societal needs, particularly in areas such as environmental stewardship, food systems, and responsible resource management. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships across Asia, noting that collaboration with countries like Singapore plays a key role in addressing shared regional and global challenges.

During the presentation, the university introduced its expansive research environment, which draws on Hokkaido’s unique natural conditions and extensive field sites.
