Indonesia, Germany Strengthen Education and Research Ties

    • Partnership expands student exchange and joint degree programs
    • Focus on skills, research, and workforce readiness
    • Collaboration supports jobs in priority sectors

Indonesia is strengthening its academic and research partnership with Germany to expand higher education opportunities, build skills, and support workforce development. The commitment was reaffirmed by Brian Yuliarto, Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, during a meeting with Ralf Beste in Jakarta.

The two countries have a long history of cooperation in higher education and scientific research. Indonesia now aims to deepen this collaboration by encouraging more partnerships between universities. Key plans include joint and double degree programs, expanded academic exchanges, and increased opportunities for Indonesian students to study in Germany. Interest among students in international education programs continues to grow, reflecting rising demand for global skills and exposure.

Beyond student mobility, the partnership also targets stronger doctoral programs, joint research funding, and researcher exchanges. These initiatives will support national priority sectors such as food security, renewable energy, clean water, industrial development, digital transformation, and defense. The focus is on building advanced skills that align education with future job markets.

Educational cooperation remains a top priority for Germany’s diplomatic mission. Ambassador Beste said the embassy actively supports student exchanges and institutional partnerships as part of its science and cultural agenda. He also highlighted an upcoming visit by the head of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), who also serves as rector of the University of Cologne. The visit is expected to strengthen dialogue with Indonesian universities and open new avenues for long-term academic collaboration.
