Kwangwoon University, TSTU Expand Korea-Uzbekistan Tech Education Ties

  • Synopsis

South Korea’s Kwangwoon University and Uzbekistan’s Tashkent State Technical University have signed a new agreement to strengthen cooperation in engineering, AI, and technical education. The partnership will focus on student exchanges, joint research, dual-degree programs, and skill development in high-demand technology sectors.

South Korea’s Kwangwoon University and Tashkent State Technical University have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at expanding cooperation in higher education, technical training, and research innovation.

The agreement was signed during a recent visit to Uzbekistan by Cho Sun-young, chairperson of the Kwangwoon Educational Foundation. The signing ceremony took place on May 13 with TSTU Rector Sadritdin Turabdjanov.

Under the partnership, both universities plan to develop joint academic and research initiatives focused on preparing students for rapidly changing technology industries. The collaboration will include faculty and student exchange programs, academic seminars, technical training initiatives, and research partnerships.

One of the major proposals under the agreement is the establishment of a Korean Language Center at TSTU. The center is expected to support language education and strengthen cultural and academic connections between South Korea and Uzbekistan.

University officials said the partnership reflects growing international cooperation in technical education and workforce development. Both institutions emphasized the importance of creating globally competitive talent with practical skills in engineering and emerging technologies.

The agreement places special focus on high-demand sectors such as:

    • Artificial intelligence
    • Electrical engineering
    • Electronics
    • Mechatronics
    • Automation technologies

The universities also discussed launching joint degree programs that would allow students to study at both institutions through '1+1' and '2+2' models. These programs would enable students to spend one or two academic years at the partner university while working toward a shared degree qualification.

Officials said the initiative will provide students with stronger international exposure, practical training opportunities, and industry-relevant technical skills. The collaboration is also expected to support research cooperation in innovation-driven sectors.

During bilateral discussions, leaders from both institutions explored broader opportunities in higher education partnerships, including collaborative research, mobility programs, and technical skill development aligned with future workforce demands.

A university representative said the agreement could help deepen long-term academic and cultural ties between South Korea and Uzbekistan while creating new educational pathways for students in both countries.

Tashkent State Technical University is one of Uzbekistan’s oldest technical universities and is known for its programs in electronics, metallurgy, mechanics, thermal power engineering, and industrial automation.

The new agreement also reflects a wider trend across Asia toward international collaboration in STEM education, AI training, and engineering research as universities work to prepare students for global technology-driven industries.
