Makerere University has launched a $12.2 million Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) project to improve access to higher education and build future-ready skills. The initiative aims to modernize teaching methods and support students who need flexible learning options.
Funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under Uganda-South Korea cooperation, the project includes a detailed ODeL master plan, a new e-learning facility, and training programs for faculty to adopt digital tools. The university has already begun construction of a dedicated e-learning building worth $3.7 million, which is expected to be completed within 22 months.
University leadership highlighted that the initiative marks a major step toward strengthening digital education. It will support better learning outcomes, research capabilities, and innovation while preparing students for evolving job markets.
The project will enable students to access education through online platforms such as live virtual classes and self-paced learning modules. This flexible model is expected to benefit working professionals, remote learners, and those with limited access to traditional classrooms.

Earlier efforts in digital learning at the university faced challenges due to limited infrastructure. With this investment, Makerere plans to scale its capabilities and position itself as a regional leader in e-learning.
The initiative also focuses on skill development by equipping both students and faculty with digital competencies. It aims to bridge the gap between education and employment by preparing learners for technology-driven careers.
This move is expected to strengthen Uganda’s education ecosystem and expand opportunities for learners across the region.
