Malala Pledges $3 Million to Support Girls' Education and Women's Rights in Afghanistan

    • Malala Yousafzai commits $3 million through the Malala Fund’s Afghanistan Initiative.
    • Grants to support 10 organisations fighting for education and women’s rights under Taliban rule.
    • Move comes as Taliban faces international pressure over human rights abuses.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai has pledged $3 million to restore women’s rights and ensure access to education for girls in Afghanistan. Announcing the move on Instagram, she said the funds will be distributed through the Malala Fund’s Afghanistan Initiative in the form of grants.

Citing the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education, Malala wrote, “For the past four years, the Taliban has barred Afghan girls from school past grade six.” She added that the initiative aims to empower women leaders, human rights defenders, and organisations working to keep education alive under Taliban rule.

The Malala Fund has partnered with 10 organisations for this effort, including Education Bridge for Afghanistan, Defenders of Equality, Freedom and Advancement for Women, Afghanistan Accountability Collective, Centre for Dialogue and Progress (Geneva), Rukhshana Media, Artlords, Women and Children Research and Advocacy Network, Rawadari, Stanford University’s Program in Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Afghans for a Better Tomorrow. Their work ranges from providing digital literacy and psychosocial support to Afghan girls, to documenting gender apartheid and holding the Taliban accountable on the global stage.

Malala, a long-standing champion of women’s education in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and beyond, recently marked her birthday with schoolchildren in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the Taliban faces mounting international pressure. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani on charges of crimes against humanity.
