Prudential Life Joins Push To Add Financial Literacy In Education

    • Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and JA Ghana marked the success of the Cha-Ching Financial Literacy Program through a high-level stakeholder forum in Accra, advocating its integration into Ghana’s basic education curriculum.
    • The Cha-Ching program, backed by Prudence Foundation, promotes core financial values Earn, Save, Spend, and Donate and has already reached 36,000+ students across 400 schools in Ghana.
    • Stakeholders endorsed financial literacy as an educational essential, unveiling innovations like a WhatsApp chatbot to expand access and strengthen early financial resilience among children nationwide.

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, in collaboration with Junior Achievement (JA) Ghana, held a high-level stakeholder engagement in Accra to commemorate the success of the Cha-Ching Financial Literacy Program and promote the integration of financial literacy into the basic education curriculum in Ghana. This engagement highlighted the collective acknowledgment of the need to empower children to be financially resilient from a young age.

The driving force behind this campaign was the Cha-Ching Financial Literacy Program, which is sponsored by Prudence Foundation, the community investment division of Prudential PLC. This program is developed around four key values: Earn, Save, Spend, and Donate. This initiative has made children aware of financial values with easy-to-understand processes. This project is not just being conducted in Ghana but has already been successfully running in six other countries such as Uganda, Nigeria, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

The Accra forum offered a platform for a representative gathering of stakeholders in the education sector in Ghana. Members who participated in the forum included representatives from the Ghana Education Service, school administrators, teachers, proprietors, as well as other institutional partners, who engaged in deliberations concerning the lifelong benefit derived from financial education. Their presence at the forum offers insight into the growing acceptance that financial literacy has become essential, rather than an add-on in education.

One significant offering brought forth by the forum was the development of a WhatsApp chat bot, specifically tailored to offer wider reach to the Cha-Ching program and financial education tools. This program aims to provide wider access to financial information using a common tool in today’s technology, especially for parents, educators, and young individuals not in participating schools but in other locations nationwide as well.

In his address at the anniversary, Edem Amesu-Addor, the Executive Director of JA Ghana, commended the effectiveness of their long-serving partnership with Prudential Life Insurance Ghana. He said that their cooperation has been instrumental in imparting valuable financial literacy skills to the younger generation, which will aid them in their journey through life.

Within the last five years alone, the Cha-Ching program has documented major impact in the country of Ghana, where it has reached over 400 schools and benefited in excess of 36,000 students directly when taking into consideration the training of over 900 teachers and volunteers.

In a panel discussion, Gloria Henrietta Yamson, the acting Chief Commercial Officer of Prudential Life Insurance in Ghana, reiterated their support for community empowerment. In her statement, parent-teacher cooperation in encouraging savings discipline in children was highlighted because financial prudence plays a crucial role in overall social upliftment.

The speakers comprised representatives from the education sector in government and private organizations, the financial sector, and civil society organizations, who were in complete agreement that the inclusion of financial literacy within the basic education curriculum in Ghana is important in ensuring that the financial future is secured both for themselves and the country at large.

The panel’s view is in line with the aim of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana to remain a force in the lives of generations to come by providing accessible financial solutions with the aim of empowering one child, one classroom, and one community at a time.
