- Bill presented by Rep. Ma. Victoria Co-Pilar, highlighting the need to teach heroism, sacrifices, and lessons of the war.
- House Committee on Higher & Technical Education passed the measure during its first regular session on September 1.
The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office or PVAO is seeking support for the approval of the bill aspiring for the inclusion of an in-depth analysis of Philippine history during the World War II into the higher education curriculum.
Presented by Representative Ma. Victoria Co-Pilar, House Bill No. 2311 aims to fill the void of college graduates knowing little about the heroism of the soldiers, atrocities faced by civilians, and the timeless lessons of this critical moment in the country's history.
PVAO Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu explained that they joined the first regular session of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education on September 1 when the committee passed the said bill.
"This action has a profound meaning for our country, particularly the young ones. World War II is a turning point not only in world history but also in the history of our people", Mapagu said at the Victory Day Commemoration Rites in Baguio City.
Mapagu noted that WWII history reminds the Filipinos of the bravery of the Filipinos throughout the archipelago during the period when the very existence of the country was at stake. He noted further that the history of this era is not merely about struggles and triumphs but also paints the picture in understanding current and future conflicts as well as on how not to have them and how to settle them.

"We should see to it that lessons of history are transmitted", Mapagu stressed. Mapagu further stated that this is a means of honoring the veterans, keeping their legacy alive, confirming their triumphs, and making certain that their gallantry will never be forgotten. "Eventually, this initiative helps create a stronger Philippines in which every citizen is aware of what freedom costs and their responsibility to defend it", he stated.
The bill also authorizes the Commission on Higher Education, in coordination with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the PVAO, to formulate and implement said program.
