    • The partnership offers students international business and technology programs with opportunities for academic mobility in Melbourne.
    • Initiative strengthens Victoria-China education and cultural ties while promoting innovation, leadership, and cross-cultural collaboration.

RMIT University has made a major step forward in reinforcing its global education footprint in China by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE) to create a joint institution. The signing ceremony, which took place at Shanghai University of International Business and Economics'  Gubei campus, was witnessed by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, thus underlining the strategic significance of the initiative in strengthening education and cultural links between Victoria and China.

The joint institute is China's highest form of recognition for international education collaborations and is designed to open up wider access to RMIT's globally renowned programs in business and technology. The students at the institute will receive an international curriculum through studies at home, as well as get a chance to experience academic mobility in Melbourne.

The RMIT-SUIBE partnership draws on almost three decades of cooperation, under which over 4,600 graduates have successfully graduated from programs in government, industry, and academia in both nations. This extensive cooperation has served not only to consolidate academic interchange but also helped to power talent development, innovation, and cross-cultural relations. The joint institute's formation signals the next stage of this long-standing tie, providing a seamless pathway for students blending international standards with regional applicability.

At the same time, in Tianjin further north, RMIT joined festivities marking 45 years of sister-city relations between Melbourne and Tianjin. The University's program in the city, such as the 2001-2019 Tianjin Municipal Leadership Training Program, which has delivered more than 400 senior leaders, demonstrates RMIT's interest in developing leadership capability and encouraging global collaboration.

These programs exemplify the University’s philosophy of education as a bridge between cultures and communities, reinforcing mutual understanding and collaboration through learning. By way of these projects, RMIT continues to prove its commitment to providing quality, globally engaged education while enhancing Australia's links to China. The collaborative institute in Shanghai and the University's continuing work on Tianjin's leadership development showcase how education can be the key to generating innovation, cross-cultural interchange, and long-term strategic collaborations that shape tomorrow's leaders and professionals.
