South Korea's Nine Education Offices Call for Live Streaming of Yoon's Impeachment Trial

  • There has been a report that nine education offices have sent an official letter to each of their schools stipulating that students will be able to watch live the Constitutional Court's decision on President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment trial on the 4th.

    Based on the education sector on the 3rd, the nine education offices of Gwangju, Gyeongnam, Seoul, Sejong, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, Ulsan, Incheon, and Chungnam sent reports to local schools suggesting the inclusion of the live broadcast of the President's impeachment trial in the educational curriculum.

    The Constitutional Court will declare its verdict on President Yoon's impeachment trial at 11 a.m. on the 4th. Seoul Superintendent of Education Jeong Geun-sik said on his Facebook page that "Tomorrow at 11 a.m. will be recorded as another historical moment in modern Korean history", and he added, "I hope that young people can directly watch the ruling tomorrow and discuss it, providing an opportunity to cherish essential constitutional values for a long time".

    It is reported that the other eight education offices besides the Seoul Education Office also sent similar documents to their schools. The superintendents of these education offices are classified as having a progressive inclination. In contrast, the superintendents of the remaining eight education offices have reportedly not sent such documents.

    As to this, in an afternoon press release to newsmen, the Ministry of Education says, "Today, the Ministry sent an official document to the education offices on precautions for watching the live broadcast of the impeachment trial".

    The formal letter issued by the Ministry of Education to the education offices contains a mandate to make sure that no breach of applicable laws, including Article 6 (Neutrality of Education) of the Framework Act on Education and the Public Official Election Act, is committed during watching the President's impeachment trial ruling. It further added that if classes should be rearranged for watching the ruling, schools have to follow internal procedures.
